In weeks four and five of the Boston-London Program’s semester in London, students explored the mysteries of ancient places.\u00a0A trip to Stonehenge brought students close to a\u00a0prehistoric monument, the site of an ancient burial mound that dates back as far as 3000 B.C.<\/p>\n

They also traveled to another ancient attraction–the Roman Baths<\/a> in the city of Bath. As early as 60-70 AD, the Romans built a temple over the site’s natural hot springs and believed they had sacred powers. In the centuries since, people have journeyed to the springs in search of their curative properties, and over one million people still visit the site very year.<\/p>\n

Students’ assigned readings\u00a0set the scene for their\u00a0travels, with T.S. Eliot\u2019s The Waste Land, <\/em>Virginia Woolf\u2019s \u201cA Room of One\u2019s Own,\u201d and Frantz Fanon\u2019s \u201cThe Wretched of the Earth.\u201d The interdisciplinary nature of the CGS education came through as they also discussed impressionism, post-impression, and modernism in the visual arts, along with jazz and the Harlem Renaissance.<\/p>\n

The journal article \u201cClose encounters with buildings<\/a>\u201d had students thinking about\u00a0urban design, and two more readings — \u201cThe Flaneur Discovers Paris<\/a>\u201d and \u201cAmbling Among London\u2019s Odd and Empty Corners<\/a>\u201d—<\/span> gave students a framework\u00a0for wandering and enjoying their surroundings. Several students captured some vivid moments of ordinary London life.<\/p>\n

Jack the Ripper Tours gave students a glimpse into the seedier side of life in London\u2019s East End, while a journey to Oxford, \u201cthe city of dreaming spires,\u201d took them walking through\u00a0the same streets that had been traveled\u00a0by Erasmus, John Donne, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Oscar Wilde, and others\u00a0centuries earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlexi-trips\u201d in weeks four and five also took students to IWM, the Museum of London, St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral, Liverpool St. Street Station, Hyde Park, Parliament Square, the Tavistock Gardens, the RAF Museum, and the British Museum.<\/p>\n

Students were lucky enough to be close by for Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebration parade and even captured a picture of the Queen’s soon-to-be-legendary<\/a> bright neon suit.<\/p>\n
