As early as 60-70 AD, the Romans built a temple over the site&#8217;s natural hot springs and believed they had sacred powers. Eliot\u2019s <em>The Waste Land, <\/em>Virginia Woolf\u2019s \u201cA Room of One\u2019s Own,\u201d and Frantz Fanon\u2019s \u201cThe Wretched of the Earth.\u201d The interdisciplinary nature of the CGS education came through as they also discussed impressionism, post-impression, and modernism in the visual arts, along with jazz and the Harlem Renaissance.<\/p>\n<p>The journal article \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/graphics\/pbs\/JanGehl_UrbanDesign_article.pdf\">Close encounters with buildings<\/a>\u201d had students thinking about\u00a0urban design, and two more readings &#8212; \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/04\/fashion\/the-flaneur-discovers-paris-a-step-at-a-time.html?_r=0\">The Flaneur Discovers Paris<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/10\/travel\/ambling-among-londons-odd-and-empty-corners.html\">Ambling Among London\u2019s Odd and Empty Corners<\/a>\u201d<span>&#8212;<\/span> gave students a framework\u00a0for wandering and enjoying their surroundings.
