Note: these guidelines are intended to prepare you for your academic advising appointment, not replace your appointment. Academic questions, including which courses you should register for, should be directed to your CGS academic advisor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Step One: Understand the Big Picture<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>College of General Studies Program Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The CGS Program: <\/strong>The College of General Studies\u2019 innovative, integrated, interdisciplinary, team-based program inspires students to make connections between disciplines and to connect their knowledge to real-world problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CGS Program Requirements: <\/strong>Required CGS program courses include two writing courses in the first year and two natural science courses in the second year. To complete the CGS program, students select at least three additional CGS humanities courses and at least three additional CGS social sciences courses to be taken during the first and second years. For more information, see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/resources-for-current-students\/academic-advising\/pathways\/cgs-courses-january-program\/\">College of General Studies Program requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BU Hub: <\/strong>All BU students will pursue coursework in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/\">BU Hub<\/a>, a general education program that is integrated into the entire undergraduate experience. BU Hub requirements are flexible and can be satisfied in many ways, through coursework in and beyond the major and, in some cases, through co-curricular activities. The CGS program fulfills\u00a0most of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/resources-for-current-students\/academic-advising\/pathways\/cgs-and-the-bu-hub\/\">BU Hub University-wide general education requirements<\/a>, and all CGS courses carry BU Hub units.<\/p>\n<p>Students will determine the most appropriate course selection in consultation with their academic advisor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advanced Credit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students who wish to apply an Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or any other examination scores\u00a0<strong>must<\/strong>\u00a0consult with their CGS academic advisor. Please refer to Boston University\u2019s Admissions\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/admissions\/apply\/faqs-helpful-forms\/advanced-credit\/\">website<\/a>\u00a0for further information.<\/p>\n<p>To have your test scores reviewed for college credit, an official score report must be sent to Boston University. Summer term 2024 dates are below. Availability on these teams is determined by your registration time assigned by the BU Registrar\u2019s Office. Refer to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/resources-for-current-students\/academic-advising\/registration\/registration-instructions\/\">registration instructions<\/a>\u00a0for guidance on using the Planner tool. <strong><strong>The planner does not reserve seats in the classes. It is a tool to plan a schedule.<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The button labeled \u201cContinue Search From\u201d\u00a0at the bottom of the screen when searching for a course means there are more courses on the next page.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CGS courses require two components: one lecture (LEC) and one discussion (DIS)<\/strong>. The MyBU Student Portal will note this next to a blue pushpin at the beginning of the course listing. The note will tell you what components you need and any special instructions that go along with that. Make sure when you are signing up for courses that you pay attention to these notes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember to\u00a0plan multiple options!\u00a0<\/strong>Your first choices may not be open. Choosing multiple options will\u00a0save you from having to search multiple times on registration day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Plan Your Electives<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Remember, no time conflicts! Make sure the times of your electives and CGS courses do not overlap. There is usually a 15-minute pass time interval between classes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Be sure to hit the \u201cContinue Search from\u201d button <\/strong><\/span><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">at the bottom of your search results to view all sections being offered.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to see what the course requires (lecture, discussion, lab, pre-lab).<\/strong> Make sure to add all required components of classes if needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>Please note that your elective classes do not need to start with the same letter as your CGS course sections.<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember to\u00a0plan multiple options!\u00a0<\/strong>The first class you choose may not work with your CGS required courses and choosing multiple options will save you from having to search multiple times on registration day.
