Below is an example of a four-year plan of a College of General Studies student pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Students will work with their CGS academic advisors and the College of Engineering to plan their own pathway to a mechanical engineering degree.

*Students entering Boston University with no prior coursework must expect a minimum of 8 semesters to complete the program. Prior approval must be granted for all external coursework.

Note: Students continuing from CGS to ENG must fulfill the following Hub areas through the CGS program: First-Year Writing Seminar (CGS RH 104); Writing Research, and Inquiry (CGS RH 103); Philosophical Inquiry (CGS HU 202); Aesthetic Exploration (CGS HU 104); Historical Consciousness (CGS HU 104); Social Inquiry I (CGS SS 103); Individual in Community (CGS SS 103); Global Citizenship & Intercultural Literacy – 2 units (CGS SS 104 and CGS SS 201); Ethical Reasoning (CGS HU 202). All other Hub areas are satisfied through the required engineering curriculum. External courses may not be used to fulfill Hub requirements. 

College of General Studies Program Requirements

  • Two rhetoric courses: CGS RH 103 and CGS RH 104
    • CGS RH 104 is taken during the London semester
  • Two natural science courses: CGS NS 201 and CGS NS 202
    • Mechanical engineering majors in good standing will be exempted from CGS NS 201 and CGS NS 202 
  • Three social science courses:
    • CGS SS 104 is required and is taken during the London semester
    • Students select at least two additional SS courses and will work with their academic advisor to determine course selection
  • Three humanities courses:
    • CGS HU 104 is required and is taken during the London semester
    • Students will work with their academic advisor to determine course selection

Note: Students who are exempt from CGS NS 202 must enroll in at least one CGS course in semester II of sophomore year.

Continuation Requirements

  • Completion of the CGS required courses and appropriate electives
  • Cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 2.00
