Doug Birdsall, former president of the American Bible Society and the Lausanne Movement. Birdsall was motivated to start conversations after the white-supremacist Dylann Roof killed nine innocent people\u00a0at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17, 2015.\u00a0Birdsall\u00a0was saddened, outraged, and disturbed that black men and women could not feel safe in their own churches.<\/p>\n<p>He brought together Christian pastors and academics from diverse backgrounds to have conversations about what happened and how to heal. This effort led to the foundation\u00a0of the Civilitas Group.<\/p>\n<p>A number of the CGCM&#8217;s members and affiliates were present at the\u00a0recent founders dinner in Boston. It was a very well attended event, which\u00a0bodes well for the future of this important organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/cgcm\/files\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-19-at-1.23.46-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cgcm\/files\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-19-at-1.23.46-PM-e1447959014173.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-11-19 at 1.23.46 PM\" width=\"238\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7365 \" \/><br \/>\n<\/a>Tyler (CGCM) and Julie Lenocker<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Civilitas Group is still getting started.
