Daewon Moon filed the following report:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4181\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4181\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/cgcm\/files\/2012\/11\/BenHartley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cgcm\/files\/2012\/11\/BenHartley-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"STH alum, Prof. Ben Hartley of Palmer Seminary presided\" title=\"BenHartley\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4181\" height=\"150\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">STH alum, Prof. Ben Hartley of Palmer Seminary presided<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2012 ASM Eastern Fellowship was held at the Maryknoll Sisters\u00a0Center in Maryknoll, New York on November 2\u20133, with the theme\u00a0\u201cClassics of Mission Spirituality.\u201d STH alum, Prof. Ben Hartley of Palmer Seminary, presided.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rady Roldan-Figueroa of Boston University gave his presentation on\u00a0the spirituality of Bartholome de Las Casas (1484\u20131566), a Dominican\u00a0missionary and social reformer in the Americas. Roldan-Figueroa<br \/>\ndiscussed the significance of Las Casas\u2019 treatise \u201cDe unico vocationis\u00a0modo\u201d (\u201cOn the Only Way of Conversion\u201d), focusing on distinctive\u00a0characteristics of sixteenth-century Spanish spirituality in the\u00a0Observance movement within the religious orders.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Claudette LaVerdiere of the Maryknoll Sisters presented her\u00a0research on the spirituality of Mother Mary Joseph Rogers (1882\u20131955),\u00a0the founder of the Maryknoll order. While a student at Smith College\u00a0in 1904, Mary Josephine organized a Mission Study Club for Catholic\u00a0students. Her recognition of women\u2019s power for mission significantly\u00a0contributed to the formation of the Maryknoll Sisters, which sent its\u00a0first missionary sisters to China in 1921. Mother Mary Joseph\u2019s focus<br \/>\non cultivating character became an integral part of the spirituality\u00a0of the Maryknolls, who adopted the motto \u201cMaking God\u2019s love visible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4182\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/cgcm\/files\/2012\/11\/GraceMay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cgcm\/files\/2012\/11\/GraceMay-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"STH alum, Dr. Grace May, a conference speaker, with two visiting researchers in World Christianity from the People's Republic of China\" title=\"GraceMay\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4182\" height=\"150\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">STH alum, Dr. Grace May, a conference speaker, with two visiting researchers in World Christianity from the People&#8217;s Republic of China<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dr. Grace May of City Seminary of New York gave a talk on Margaret\u00a0Emma Barber (1866\u20131929), a missionary to China who was a spiritual\u00a0mentor of Watchman Nee, the most influential leader in the Chinese\u00a0house church movement. Strongly influenced by the Keswick holiness\u00a0movement in England, Barber emphasized the discipleship training of\u00a0indigenous people, particularly the training of local \u201cBible women\u201d to\u00a0reach out to other women.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three faculty members&#8211;Drs.
