Degree Programs

The size of Boston University, and the cross-disciplinary nature of World Christianity, means the subject can be pursued through three different PhD programs at the School of  Theology.

The PhD program is broken into three tracks. Both tracks 1 and 3 allow a student to craft a focus in World Christianity or Mission Studies. A student may earn a PhD in Track 1: Biblical and Historical Studies, with a focus in mission studies or the history of Christianity. Alternatively, a student may earn a PhD in Track 3: Practical Theology, with a concentration in Evangelism and Missiology.

In addition, a student could also earn a PhD with a focus in mission studies by participating in the joint PhD program with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

Some overlap exists between the three programs, but ultimately each one cultivates the particular skills relevant to its discipline. Before applying, a prospective students should explore how they want to approach World Christianity or Mission Studies at Boston University.
