{"id":812,"date":"2022-03-30T15:21:25","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=812"},"modified":"2025-07-31T13:20:58","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T17:20:58","slug":"william-lumpkin","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/william-lumpkin\/","title":{"rendered":"William Lumpkin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><strong>William Lumpkin<\/strong>\u2019s extensive repertoire and <\/span><span>career have led to engagements with Opera <\/span><span>Theatre of St. Louis and Boston Lyric Opera, <\/span><span>having previously served on the music staff for <\/span><span>Los Angeles Opera, Aspen Opera Theatre, and <\/span><span>Wolf Trap Opera. Additionally, Maestro Lumpkin <\/span><span>led performances of the Mary Zimmerman <\/span><span>production of Philip Glass\u2019s Galileo Galilei as part <\/span><span>of the Brooklyn Academy of Music\u2019s New Wave <\/span><span>Festival, having previously conducted world <\/span><span>premiere performances at the Goodman Theatre <\/span><span>in Chicago. Most recently, Mr. Lumpkin conducted <\/span><span>performances of Die Entf\u00fchrung aus dem Serail <\/span><span>at Opera Grand Rapids with members of the <\/span><span>Grand Rapids Symphony in a production directed <\/span><span>by Eve Summer and was guest conductor for <\/span><span>The Meadows School for the Arts at Southern <\/span><span>Methodist University production of Suor Angelica <\/span><span>and Gianni Schicchi. Mr. Lumpkin conducted the <\/span><span>American premiere of Jonathan Dove\u2019s Flight <\/span><span>with Opera Theatre of St. Louis and again for <\/span><span>Boston Lyric Opera, which Opera News praised, <\/span><span>stating \u201cDove\u2019s impressive score was conducted <\/span><span>wonderfully by another veteran of the Saint Louis <\/span><span>production, William Lumpkin.\u201d Additional credits <\/span><span>at St. Louis include La boh\u00e8me, The Magic Flute, <\/span><span>Lucia di Lammermoor, and Hansel and Gretel. He <\/span><span>also joined Boston Lyric Opera to conduct Cos\u00ec <\/span><span>fan tutte. Of this production, Opera News stated <\/span><span>\u201cLumpkin kept his players and singers under <\/span><span>firm control, at the same time allowing them <\/span><span>sufficient liberty to bring out nuances in their <\/span><span>performances,\u201d and the Boston Globe noted \u201cHis <\/span><span>work had brio, style, and heart, and the orchestra <\/span><span>played beautifully for him.\u201d As Associate Professor <\/span><span>of Music and the Artistic Director and Conductor <\/span><span>for the Opera Institute at Boston University, he has <\/span><span>conducted over 40 opera productions, including <\/span><span>a co-production with Glimmerglass Opera of <\/span><span>E. Loren Meeker\u2019s production of Janacek\u2019s The <\/span><span>Cunning Little Vixen, a co-commission with New <\/span><span>York City Opera of Tobias Picker\u2019s chamber <\/span><span>version of his opera Dolores Claiborne, and a <\/span><span>concert version of Vanessa with Boston University <\/span><span>alum Lauren Flanigan. He has also appeared <\/span><span>as guest conductor at Indiana University and <\/span><span>University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
