{"id":785,"date":"2022-03-30T15:23:18","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=785"},"modified":"2024-04-04T11:01:49","modified_gmt":"2024-04-04T15:01:49","slug":"benjamin-levy","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/benjamin-levy\/","title":{"rendered":"Benjamin Levy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boston Symphony Orchestra double-bassist <strong>Benjamin Levy<\/strong> was born in Cooperstown, New York, in 1980 and grew up in Pennsylvania and Colorado. While in high school he studied with David Potter, and spent two summers studying with Stuart Sankey at the Aspen Music Festival. Mr. Levy has had chamber music collaborations with soprano Dawn Upshaw, the Borromeo String Quartet, the Hawthorne String Quartet, New England Conservatory\u2019s First Monday Series, Boston Musica Viva, and Collage New Music.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, while a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, Mr. Levy was the recipient of the Maurice Schwartz Prize and was reviewed in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>New York Times<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>for his performance of Jacob Druckman\u2019s \u201cValentine\u201d for solo double bass. A graduate of New England Conservatory and winner of the George Whitefield Chadwick Medal, Mr. Levy joined the bass section of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the start of the 2003 Tanglewood season and was appointed 3rd\u00a0chair of the orchestra\u2019s bass section at the start of the 2007\u20132008 season. Mr. Levy is also on the board of directors of Music For Autism, a nonprofit organization that is committed to raising public awareness and improving the quality of life of individuals with autism and their families through music.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 Mr. Levy joined the faculty of the Boston Conservatory, where he is currently the head of the school\u2019s double-bass program. Mr. Levy is also a member of the faculty at Boston University\u2019s School of Music. Mr. Levy\u2019s teachers have included David Potter, Todd Seeber, Timothy Pitts, Paul Ellison, and Stuart Sankey.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of music, one of Ben\u2019s passions is slow-smoke barbecue.
