{"id":524,"date":"2022-03-30T15:29:47","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=524"},"modified":"2022-09-12T12:58:10","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T16:58:10","slug":"andre-de-quadros","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/andre-de-quadros\/","title":{"rendered":"Andr\u00e9 de Quadros"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Andr\u00e9 de Quadros<\/strong>, music educator, conductor, ethnomusicologist, writer, and human rights activist has conducted and undertaken research in over forty countries.\u00a0His professional work has taken him to the most diverse settings, spanning professional ensembles, and projects with prisons, peacebuilding and reconciliation, psychosocial rehabilitation, refugees and asylum-seekers, poverty locations, and victims of torture and trauma.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. de Quadros leads the following choirs:<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commongroundvoices.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Common Ground Voices<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Israeli-Palestinian-international), the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msuchoir.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manado State University Choir<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Indonesia), the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.muslimchoralensemble.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Muslim Choral Ensemble<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Sri Lanka), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Countries Youth Choir, and Boston\u2019s<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.voices21c.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VOICES 21C<\/a>. He co-leads<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgvlafrontera.org\/english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Common Ground Voices \/ La Frontera<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Mexico-US border). His conducting engagements of note include the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Bulgaria with which he toured Spain, the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massmea.org\/newsevents\/all-state-festival-concert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Massachusetts All-State Chorus<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(USA), the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/tanglewood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(USA), the Prokofiev Symphony Orchestra (Ukraine), the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycgb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Youth Choirs of Great Britain<\/a>, the Nusantara Chamber Orchestra (Indonesia), the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra, the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/performing-arts-centres\/about\/monash-academy-orchestra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Monash Orchestra<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Australia), and the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jaunamuzika.lt\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jauna Muzika<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>choir (Lithuania).<\/p>\n<p>He is deeply committed to justice and equity, peacebuilding and reconciliation. During the Iraq war, in 2008 and 2012, he co-directed\u00a0<em>Aswatuna<\/em>: Arab Choral Festival in Jordan that brought together community choirs from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria.\u00a0Since 2010, he has co-directed the Community Heartsong, a historic project with young Palestinian and Israeli choral musicians in East Jerusalem working to foster understanding between the two communities. Common Ground Voices based in Jerusalem has been a space for building understanding through grassroots peacebuilding efforts.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly a decade, Andr\u00e9 de Quadros has worked in Massachusetts prisons, jails, and detention centers with a focus on empowering people in incarcerated settings to tell their stories through improvised music, song-creation, poetry, movement, and theater. \u00a0The approach co-created by him is called Empowering Song.<\/p>\n<p>As a public intellectual engaging with community, he has given countless international talks, lectures and workshops with community groups. Most recently, he co-founded the justice-focused media initiative,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechoralcommons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Choral Commons<\/a>, a media space for podcasts, webinars, educational resources, and choral creations with a focus on social justice projects.<\/p>\n<p>Professor de Quadros was a Distinguished Academic Visitor,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.queens.cam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queens\u2019 College, at the University of Cambridge<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(2019) and Visiting Professor,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsiuniversity.edu.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UCSI University<\/a>, Malaysia (2016-2018). Currently, he serves as Visiting Professor,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vu.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victoria University<\/a>, Australia and Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University, China. He is the artistic director of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.conducting21c.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conducting 21C: Musical Leadership for a New Century<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>at the Eric Ericson International Choral Centre in Sweden. Through this he is seen as a pioneer in conducting pedagogy through a process of music-making that stretches the boundaries of traditional music-making by developing compassionate, creative performance and engagement, and cross-cultural experimental repertoire.\u00a0He is the artistic director of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalmusicfestival.london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London International Music Festival<\/a>, a member of the Scientific Board of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/singing-hospitals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Network for Singing Hospitals<\/a>, a member of the steering committee of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifcm.net\/projects\/conductors-without-borders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conductors Without Borders<\/a>, a member of Interkultur\u2019s<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interkultur.com\/about\/world-choir-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Choir Council<\/a>, and a faculty member of the International Choral Academy, and CHORALSPACE \u2013 International Academy for Choral Arts. Since 2011, he has been the founding director of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssrn.com\/index.cfm\/en\/mrcn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Music Research and Composition Network<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), the fourth largest online repository in the world. Additionally, he serves on numerous advisory and editorial boards.<\/p>\n<p>His work in public health has taken him to sites of poverty in Guatemala, India, and Peru, where he has pioneered an arts-based community development (ABCD) approach to discover the power between the arts and public health through narrative community theater.<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 de Quadros has edited\u00a0and contributed to<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Many Seeds, Different Flowers: The Music Education Legacy of Carl Orff<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(CIRCME),<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/cambridge-companion-to-choral-music\/F9DC295391045DCBAE87CBD1EEC08147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Cambridge Companion to Choral Music<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(Cambridge University Press); co-edited and co-authored<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.giamusic.com\/store\/resource\/tanglewood-ii-book-g8405\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Tanglewood II: Summoning the Future of Music Education<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(GIA Press) and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/view\/title\/56226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>My Body was Left on the Street: Music Education and Displacement<\/em><\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Brill); and authored<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Focus-Choral-Music-in-Global-Perspective\/Quadros\/p\/book\/9780415896559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Focus: Choral Music in Global Perspective<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(Routledge).
