Dually\u00a0recognized for his &#8220;strong and striking&#8221; instrument\u00a0(Opera Today) and &#8220;keen dramatic sense&#8221; (Texas Classical Review), Thomas has continually gained recognition performing technically and dramatically demanding roles that range from\u00a0the classics of Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini, to the contemporary works of the American operatic stage.<\/p>\n<p>He recently had an impressive debut in the role of Amonasro in Verdi\u2019s <em>Aida<\/em> at the <strong>Utah Festival Opera<\/strong> and reprised the role of Porgy in Gershwin&#8217;s <em>Porgy &amp; Bess<\/em> at <strong>Greensboro Opera<\/strong> alongside Rhiannon Giddens to great acclaim. Further performances with distinguished arts institutions include appearances\u00a0as\u00a0Germont in <em>La Traviata<\/em> at <strong>Opera Orlando<\/strong>, Sharpless in <em>Madama Butterfly<\/em> at <strong>Indianapolis Opera<\/strong>, and Scarpia in <em>Tosca<\/em> at <strong>Opera Roanoke<\/strong>. Cannon&#8217;s debut of Porgy at <strong>Fort Worth Opera <\/strong>marked him a &#8220;vocal powerhouse&#8221; (The Column) and his Escamillo in <em>Carmen<\/em> was &#8220;riveting&#8221; at The Music Academy of the West.\u00a0Other roles of note include Enrico in <em>Lucia di Lammermoor<\/em>, Conte di Luna in <em>Il Trovatore<\/em>, Albert in <em>Werther<\/em>, Figaro in <em>Ghosts of Versailles<\/em>, and title roles of <em>Don Pasquale<\/em> and <em>Gianni Schicchi<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cannon has sung extensively with <strong>Arizona Opera<\/strong> where he was engaged as a resident artist and has returned to perform roles in Gregory Spears&#8217; <em>Fellow Travelers<\/em> and Redler&#8217;s <em>The Falling and The Rising<\/em>.\u00a0In addition, he is a graduate of the training programs at <strong>The Glimmerglass Festival<\/strong>, <strong>Chautauqua Opera<\/strong>, <strong>Santa Fe Opera<\/strong>, <strong>The Dallas Opera<\/strong>, and <strong>Music Academy of the West<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas appears regularly as a concert\u00a0soloist. He has performed\u00a0Verdi\u2019s\u00a0<em>Requiem<\/em> at <strong>Carnegie Hall-NYC<\/strong> conducted by\u00a0Hiroya Aoki,\u00a0and Delius\u2019\u00a0Eine <em>Messe des Lebens<\/em>\u00a0with <strong>The American Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> under the direction of Leon Botstein. He has sung Haydn&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Die Sch\u00f6phfung<\/em>\u00a0and Mozart&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Requiem<\/em>\u00a0at The Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria. A host of performances elsewhere have included Brahms&#8217;\u00a0<em>Ein Deutsches Requiem<\/em>, Handel\u2019s\u00a0<em>Messiah<\/em>, Bach\u2019s\u00a0<em>B Minor Mass<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>St. Matthew\u2019s Passion<\/em>.\u00a0He recently\u00a0performed\u00a0Beethoven&#8217;s 9th Symphony with <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Colorado Symphony<\/strong> under the direction of Peter Oundjian. He has been a featured soloist with <strong>The Lied Society of Minnesota<\/strong>, NYC\u2019s <strong>Center for Contemporary Opera<\/strong>, <strong>Canterbury Voices<\/strong> OKC, the <strong>Walla Walla Symphony Orchestra<\/strong>, and <strong>The St. Cecilia Chorus<\/strong> <strong>of NY<\/strong>. Thomas&#8217; &#8220;resonant timbre [and] dramatic sensibility&#8221; (Onstage NTX) was noted in his performance of Damien Geter&#8217;s <em>An African Requiem<\/em>\u00a0at <strong>Fort Worth Opera<\/strong>, under the direction of the composer.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Cannon has performed as an artist-teacher and clinician throughout the country, and he holds a Bachelor of Music from <strong>Baylor University<\/strong>, a Master\u2019s in Vocal Performance from <strong>The Juilliard School<\/strong>, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from <strong>The University of Oklahoma<\/strong>. His notable teachers have included Marlena Malas, Mignon Dunn, Dr. John Van Cura, Kim Josephson, and Marilyn Horne. Further apprenticeships have included <strong>Opera North<\/strong>, and <strong>The International Vocal Arts Institute<\/strong> under the direction of Joan Dornemann. Thomas was the first-place winner of Oklahoma University\u2019s Benton Schmidt Competition, and he received a full scholarship to attend The Juilliard School. Garnered awards include those from The Dallas Opera Guild, The Chautauqua Opera Guild, The Anna Sosenko Foundation, West Palm Beach Opera, Opera Birmingham, IVAI\u2019s Silverman Prize, and The Metropolitan Opera National Council.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas has served on the faculties of <strong>The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma<\/strong> and The Hartt School at <strong>The University of Hartford<\/strong>.
