Students have an important role in the advising process.<\/p>\n<p>Degree requirements and expectations are outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/bulletin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CFA Bulletin,<\/a> and students should be sure they are following those policies and requirements. Even so, there are often times when questions or guidance are needed as you navigate your program.<\/p>\n<p>When working with your advisor, please be sure you have looked at your requirements and articulated specific questions for your advisor to address. Please use the tools below to assist you in this process.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Degree Requirements<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>All Graduate &amp; Professional programs in the College of Fine Arts have their degree requirements outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/bulletin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston University Bulletin<\/a>. Students are encouraged to use this resource frequently to plan their course selection.<\/p>\n<p>Degree requirements are listed in the current academic year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/bulletin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston University Bulletin.<\/a> Students who were admitted prior to the current academic year may find their academic Bulletin in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/bulletin\/archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bulletin Archives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For those students for whom a thesis or dissertation is a requirement, please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.bu.edu\/theses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mugar Library guide<\/a> to writing and submitting your thesis or dissertation.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Degree Progress<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>CFA students are encouraged to use the Degree Advice tool to monitor progress toward their degree. While Degree Progress does not currently offer planning tools, it is important to refer to this audit, to understand what program requirements have been officially fulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>Degree Progress is an advising tool. It is not your transcript, nor notification of completion of degree requirements. Discrepancies that appear should be investigated further with either your advisor, the department, or the CFA Registrar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading Your Degree Progress<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Requirements with a Green Check Mark are complete.<\/li>\n<li>Requirements with a Yellow &#8220;Satisfied IP&#8221; are in the process of being completed. Be sure to check the compliance tab on your portal and resolve any compliance issues before registration opens. If you are out of compliance with any University requirements, you will not be permitted to register until the issue is resolved. Students must be registered for every semester during the academic year until all degree requirements have been met, unless granted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/forms\/leave-of-absence-form\/\">leave of absence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Planner \u2013 an online tool that allows you to create and modify your schedule before registering for the courses \u2013 enables you to add classes to a draft schedule before registration opens. To access the planner, go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/student.bu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyBUStudentPortal<\/a>, click \u201cRegistration Planner\u201d from the main page options. You can then search for, and add courses to your Planner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Registration Procedure:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>To register for courses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Log into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/student.bu.edu\/MyBU\/\" data-outlook-id=\"2ee1b4e7-0a14-428f-ab51-4eb763df5885\">MyBU Student Portal<\/a>\u00a0using your BU username and Kerberos password. Then complete the Duo two-step verification.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>My Academics<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em> Fall Class Search<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Enrollment<\/em>\u00a0on the left-hand side<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Schedule Builder<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Expand Filters<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Underneath the Course Selection header, select the\u00a0<em>Subject (<\/em>e.g. CFA MT \u2013 Music Theory) and\u00a0<em>Catalogue Number\u00a0<\/em>(e.g. 600 \u2013 Analytical Techniques) of your first desired course.<\/li>\n<li>Read the course description to make sure this is your desired course. If it is, click\u00a0<em>Add Course.\u00a0<\/em>The course is now in your Schedule Builder and will be listed below your search.<\/li>\n<li>Now it\u2019s time to pick your exact section(s) of this course. Next to the course you just added, choose\u00a0<em>Select Sections<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>To add more courses, select\u00a0<em>Expand Filters<\/em>. Then,\u00a0<em>Reset Filters<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Follow steps 6-8 to add other courses to your Schedule Builder.<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to click\u00a0<em>Save.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have your preferred schedule, you can select favorites in the top right corner. Click\u00a0<em>view<\/em>. You will now be able to review your preferred schedule. When ready, click\u00a0<em>enroll.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Schedule Planning<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Registration for current students begins in October for the following spring semester, and in April for the following fall semester. Registration dates are assigned by class year, and can be found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/calendars\/registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Registrar<\/a> website. Be sure to meet with your academic advisor (listed on your <a href=\"https:\/\/student.bu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyBUStudentPortal<\/a> &gt; Academic Advising) before registration opens to review your plans for the coming semester. The faculty advisor is a mentor and guide through the degree program. It is the student&#8217;s responsibility to be familiar with degree requirements (resources below) and track their progress through those requirements. In addition to loans (federal and credit-based) and external funding opportunities that are available, we offer a range of College-based aid in the form of scholarships and assistantships for students in our on-campus programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/admissions\/graduate\/graduate-financial-aid\/\">Tuition &amp; Financial Aid<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Guidelines for Graduate Elective Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All courses taken towards a graduate degree should be at the 500 level or above. \u00a0Graduate students should register for electives that are at the graduate level.<\/p>\n<p>If a student has a sincere need to take an undergraduate-level course to support their artistic research, they may do so but the course cannot count towards their degree requirements (ie, a student in an MFA program would take the course in excess of their 60 credits for their MFA).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Incomplete Grades <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An incomplete grade (\u201cI\u201d) is used only when the student has conferred with the instructor prior to the submission of grades and there are mutually acceptable reasons for the incomplete work.
