{"id":4820,"date":"2022-06-09T11:41:01","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T15:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/?page_id=4820"},"modified":"2025-11-14T13:39:38","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T18:39:38","slug":"ensembles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/music\/ensembles\/","title":{"rendered":"Ensembles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The large ensembles at Boston University play a central role in the education of the School\u2019s instrumentalists and singers who aspire to professions as chamber musicians, ensemble musicians, teachers, or a combination of all three.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions about music-major large ensembles at Boston University, email Ensembles Manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/katharine-lynn-hurd\/\">Katharine Hurd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Large Ensembles<\/h3>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Symphony and Chamber Orchestra<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The Boston University School of Music orchestral program, which includes the Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra, plays a central role in the education of the School\u2019s instrumentalists who aspire to professions as chamber musicians, orchestral musicians, teachers, or a combination of all three.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/sarah-ioannides\/\">Sarah Ioannides<\/a>, Director of Orchestral Activities, oversees artistic and educational planning for the entire program and conducts the majority of the Symphony Orchestra performances, including their annual concert at Boston\u2019s Symphony Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The orchestras also work with other BU faculty, distinguished guest conductors, and members of the graduate conducting program. Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/william-lumpkin\/\">William Lumpkin<\/a>, Director of the BU Opera Institute, directs the school\u2019s two annual mainstage opera productions. The orchestras collaborate with the choral department, perform concerto repertoire with student competition winners, and take part in composition reading sessions. All orchestral students are assigned to projects on a per-cycle basis, regularly rotating between the Symphony and Chamber orchestras, operas, and other projects.<\/p>\n<p><span>Advanced non-music majors (including music minors) may audition for this group under <\/span><span>these criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>They must be registered for CFA ML Applied lessons or CFA MP Non-Major lessons for School of Music credit<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Both the applied teacher and conductor of the ensemble must approve of that student\u2019s audition<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>School of Music Performance Majors and Music Education Majors shall have first priority for ensemble placement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If interested, please contact the Ensembles Manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/katharine-lynn-hurd\/\">Katharine Hurd<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"blue\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Wind Ensemble<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/joshua-roach\/\">Professor Joshua Roach<\/a>, the Wind Ensemble is designed to prepare wind, brass, and percussion players for professional careers in ensemble collaboration. It also provides future music educators with performance experiences that enhance their musicianship and inform their future work as program\/ensemble leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Membership in the Wind Ensemble is determined by auditions held in conjunction with the School of Music in September. Qualified non-music majors (including music minors) who have already spent at least one year at Boston University in a non-major ensemble may audition for this group. If interested, please contact the Ensembles Manager, <a href=\"mailto: khurd@bu.edu\">Katharine Hurd<\/a>.<span class=\"im\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"pink\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Choruses<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chamber Choir (CFA MP 604 A\/B)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>40-voice auditioned mixed chamber choir made up primarily of School of Music voice\/music education majors and select non-majors from outside the School of Music. Non-majors (undergraduate\/graduate\/community members) across the university are encouraged to audition. Auditions are held on 9\/1\/2025 from 11:00-3:30PM. Please email Dr. Daniel Parsley, Director of Choral Activities &amp; Director of Graduate Conducting programs, at <a href=\"mailto:dparsley@bu.edu\">dparsley@bu.edu<\/a> to schedule your audition.<\/p>\n<p><span>Recent highlights included a performances of J.S. Bach\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span>St John Passion\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>with Handel &amp; Haydn Society (H+H) and BU Baroque Orchestra, Maurice Durufl\u00e9\u2019s <\/span><i><span>Requiem, <\/span><\/i><span>Caroline Shaw\u2019s<\/span><i><span> To the Hands<\/span><\/i><span>, Britten <\/span><i><span>Ceremony of Carols<\/span><\/i><span>, Brahms\u2019 <\/span><i><span>Liebeslieder Walzer, <\/span><\/i><span>and a special performance of spirituals with the GRAMMY\u00ae Award-winning American Spiritual Ensemble<\/span><i><span>.<\/span><\/i> <span>\u00a0Fall 2025 will feature Bach <\/span><i><span>Magnficat<\/span><\/i><span> with the BU Chamber Orchestra, opportunities for chamber ensemble work with a madrigal focused concert including Whitare <\/span><i><span>Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine <\/span><\/i><span>alongside works by Monteverdi, Wilbye and more, as well a collaborative performance at Boston Symphony Hall for the Boston 250th\u00a0anniversary All City Concert. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Course Time: Monday &amp; Friday 12:20p-2:05p (CFA MP 604 A-B &#8211; 0.5 credit)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Symphonic Chorus (CFA MP 603\/MU 099\/199)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>125-voice Symphony Chorus of music majors, non-majors, and faculty\/staff\/alumni from across the greater Boston University community. Symphonic Chorus rehearses Wednesday from 7:00-9:30pm <\/span><span>(0-1 credit)<\/span><span> and performs each fall with the BU Chamber Orchestra as well on BU\u2019s annual spring performance at Boston Symphony Hall. Recent season highlights include a Boston Symphony Hall concerts featuring Leonard Bernstein\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span>Chichester Psalms,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>Ravel\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span>Daphnis et Chlo\u00e9 ,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>V.
