Ideal candidates have at least three to five years of professional directing experience outside of a university setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The core curriculum includes colloquium, scene study, design master class, dramatic literature, dramatic criticism, directed studies, and an internship with a recognized professional arts organization or artistic mentor of the student\u2019s choice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Direct a large-scale, and widely-promoted,&nbsp;thesis production with a full complement of designers. For MFA Directing student&nbsp;<strong>Gregg Wiggans<\/strong>&nbsp;(CFA\u201925), standing on the same floor that these individuals stood on was a moment to remember. A reminder that \u201cmy work is [also] valid to someone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">What was Gregg doing backstage at Carnegie Hall? This summer, Gregg associate directed Stephen Sondheim\u2019s&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiehall.org\/Calendar\/2024\/06\/20\/FOLLIES-in-Concert-0800PM\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Follies&nbsp;<\/em>at Carnegie Hall<\/a>. The concert series, put on by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/transportgroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Transport Group Theater Company<\/a>, showcased a lineup of 50 actors \u2013 including 14 Tony Award winners and 38 nominees \u2013 and a 30-piece orchestra. The one-night show sold out Carnegie Hall in less than 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>The&nbsp;MFA Directing program&nbsp;here at BU allows opportunity for you to try ideas and pivot, quickly. Entering a high-pressure situation where you have less than 24 hours to stage a concert adaptation of&nbsp;<em>Follies<\/em>&nbsp;with a cast of 50 and orchestra of 30 \u2013 you must be willing to try something else. Ideas are flexible; other artists\u2019 questions and experimentations only strengthen the process, sharing the ownership of production. As Artistic Director of the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O\u2019Neill Theater Center for 16 seasons, under Goldberg\u2019s tenure, 100 plays were developed and the O\u2019Neill was awarded the 2010 Regional Tony Award. We invite finalists to spend the day with us in Boston in late March for further orientation, interviews, tours, discussion with current students, and the direction of a scene of your choice with our current BFA acting students. Following this, we make our decisions in early April. Applicants not admitted to the program are usually notified in mid-to-late March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is an \u201cearly career professional?\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;This describes an applicant who completed their undergraduate degree at least three to five years prior to applying, and someone who has pursued a life in the theatre or related area, developing their own voice as a director in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the \u201cArtistic Director Option?\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Students interested in pursuing this option will complete a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/degrees-certificates\/arts-management-graduate-certificate\/\" target=\"_blank\">certificate in arts administration<\/a> through the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/\" target=\"_blank\">BU Metropolitan College<\/a> in addition to their MFA directing curriculum. This supplemental training allows for the director to gain practical knowledge in the understanding of institutional tasks requisite for the artistic directorship of a non-profit or commercial theatre venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is it possible for a full-time MFA directing student to hold a job while in the program?<\/strong>&nbsp;No. The full-time curriculum in addition to assisting, directing, and homework makes that not feasible during the school year. Students are free to have jobs, do internships, engage in other directing experiences, etc., during the summer or the long winter break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is it possible for an enrolled MFA directing student to direct outside of the program?<\/strong>&nbsp;During the school year, we encourage students to direct within the program and to take advantage of our mentorship in residence. As stated above, summers and winter breaks provide time to work elsewhere. Students, in consultation with faculty, have successfully petitioned faculty to adjust the timing of their internship semester away to accommodate an unusual opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How many plays does an MFA directing student direct over their three years in the program?<\/strong>&nbsp;Students customarily direct six to seven productions in their 2.5 semesters in residence. Year 1: two productions, Year 2: three productions, Year 3: one or two productions (including Thesis project).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who is in the casting pool for these directing projects?<\/strong>&nbsp;The bulk of the casting pool is comprised of our talented BFA acting and theatre arts students. On rare occasions, MFA directing students and faculty\/staff members are cast in productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What sort of financial support is offered for admitted MFA directing students?<\/strong>&nbsp;BU School of Theatre offers one full-tuition scholarship to one or two directing students per year. This funding includes an assistantship and a stipend. Living costs are the student\u2019s responsibility.
