In April 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was plunged into chaos and uncertainty. Video tutorials for homemade masks were everywhere and toilet paper aisles were barren. No one quite understood what was happening or knew how to stay safe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julian Shapiro-Barnum (CFA\u201921) was a BU senior at the time. He needed to figure out a direction for his College of Fine Arts senior thesis<\/a>, but found that he needed some direction in his own life, too. So, he turned to the wisest among us for some inspiration: children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shapiro-Barnum enlisted the help of his friends Charlotte Weinman (CFA\u201922, CAS\u201922) and Julia Ty Goldberg (CFA\u201921) to film, edit, and produce a short video that cut together the best advice on how to be happy from children playing in a nearby Boston playground. The result, Recess Therapy<\/em><\/a>, would eventually become a wildly popular video series that also became their full-time jobs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, if you find yourself reflexively saying, \u201cIt has the juice,\u201d after someone mentions \u201ccorn,\u201d you have Shapiro-Barnum, Weinman, and Ty Goldberg to thank. Their video featuring Tariq, \u201cthe CEO of corn,\u201d has more than 2 million likes on Instagram<\/a> and more than 10 million views on YouTube<\/a>\u2014and became a viral sensation during fall 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show has become so successful, Shapiro-Barnum was\u00a0recognized<\/a>\u00a0this year by\u00a0Forbes<\/em>\u00a0in the magazine\u2019s annual\u00a0\u201c30 Under 30\u201d list<\/a>. He\u2019s one of five alumni and former BU students to make the list, which celebrates 600 of \u201ctomorrow\u2019s brightest young leaders,\u201d according to\u00a0Forbes<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year,\u00a0Forbes<\/em>\u00a0writers and editors combed through more than 12,000 candidates, narrowing the list to those who gained the most funding or revenue and those who showed the most social impact, inventiveness, and potential.\u00a0\u201cThe 600 who made the cut are both an inspiration and a challenge to the conventional wisdom,\u201d\u00a0writes Kristin Stoller<\/a>, deputy editor of the \u201c30 Under 30\u201d list. \u201cEither way, they provide plenty of reason to believe that tomorrow will be brighter than today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
