{"id":57742,"date":"2017-10-05T10:20:11","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T14:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/?p=57742"},"modified":"2022-08-02T14:05:39","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T18:05:39","slug":"joseph-gifford","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/news\/articles\/2017\/joseph-gifford\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Emeritus Joseph Gifford Passed Away on September 12"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar news-prepress-layout-metabar\">\n\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-date\">October 5, 2017<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-credits\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-share js-bu-prepress-share-tools\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"icon-twitter\"><span>Twitter<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t<span class=\"icon-facebook\"><span>Facebook<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t<span class=\"icon-action\"><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cfa\/files\/2017\/10\/joe-gifford-450.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Gifford\" width=\"350\" height=\"457\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-57747\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLife is the eternal spring.\u201d\u00a0 Joseph Gifford<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>May 14, 1920 \u2013 September 12, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dancer, Teacher, World Traveler, Author and Spiritualist Joseph Gornbein Gifford passed away at age 97 of natural causes in September.<\/p>\n<p>Born May 14, 1920 in Niagara Falls, New York and raised in Michigan, Joe lived most of his life in New York City and Boston with his life-partner Talbot Waterman and African Gray Parrot, Hero.<\/p>\n<p>Following graduation from the University of Michigan, Joe began his performing career in New York City as a member of the Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman Dance Company.\u00a0\u00a0He later formed his own company, the Joseph Gifford Dance Theater, which performed throughout the United States.\u00a0\u00a0Additionally, he danced in several Broadway musicals and taught at the New Dance Group Studio.<\/p>\n<p>Joe later joined the faculty of the School of Theatre Arts at Boston University and established a curriculum in movement training for actors.\u00a0 And, after \u2018retiring\u2019 25 years later, developed movement workshops for conductors through the League of American Orchestras.\u00a0\u00a0Until he passed, Joe was still teaching musicians and conductors on using their body to master their art.<\/p>\n<p>Joe was a spiritual man and attained the 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0degree in Authentic Reiki<strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/strong>, studied transcendental meditation, and meditated every morning.<\/p>\n<p>A world traveler, he and Waterman visited nearly every continent and regularly attended symphonies, operas, and dance performances.<\/p>\n<p>Joe was the subject of a documentary on his life and teachings,\u00a0\u201cThe Legacy of Joseph Gifford\u201d (2015) and a recently completed video series, \u201cMusic of Life\u201d (2017).<\/p>\n<p>His passion for life and boundless energy continued until his death, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, spirit and teaching.<\/p>\n<p>His family would like to thank Joe&#8217;s friends for the love and support that was constantly present in his final days.<\/p>\n<p>Joe is survived by his brother Carl (Myra) Gornbein, sister-in-law Reva Gornbein, and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. The 3pm event will take place in 206.
