At the recent\u00a0BU Spark! Demo Day<\/a>, students showcased their semester-long data projects, exhibiting not just their technical chops, but also their confidence, professionalism, and presentation skills.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Demo Day highlights unique CDS Duan Family Spark! Initiative data science and computing projects, dreamt up by ambitious students or initiated through partnerships with external clients. With student posters and presentations, and food and more, the event, held in the Duan Family Center for Computing & Data Sciences, drew a range of attendees, from students and professors to industry and civil society partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is part of the larger\u00a0Experiential Learning Expo<\/a>, which also featured student projects from the\u00a0Learning Assistant<\/a>\u00a0Program and the\u00a0Cross-College Challenge\u00a0<\/a>(XCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alara Kalfazade<\/strong> (CFA\u201927), Margarita Gomez-Puche<\/strong> (CFA\u201927), Melih Yilmaz<\/strong> (CAS\u201928) and Yue Zhou <\/strong>(CFA\u201927) won the Innovation Award for creating a font-creation tool called Percent. The web-based platform was made for students and beginners who wish to design their own fonts from scratch and are frustrated with complex or expensive software.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea came from the team\u2019s struggle in a type-design class, where they found the existing tools difficult to use. \u201cWe began experimenting with simplifying letterforms into basic shapes, and learned the letterform anatomy with circles,\u201d Kalfazade says. \u201cThen we got the idea that resizing circles could be a way to create typefaces\u201d in a browser-based tool, accessible by anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gomez-Puche says the group wanted to give non-designers a way into typography without the steep learning curve or cost of traditional software. \u201cPercent is meant for anyone who has ever wanted to play with type, but doesn\u2019t have that design background,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to postbaccalaureate fellow Nolan Thompson<\/strong> (CFA\u201924, COM\u201924, MET\u201926), the event doubles as a networking hub for BU\u2019s STEM community and industry partners. \u201cIt\u2019s the first taste of the industry,\u201d Thompson says. \u201cClients come [to meet] a lot of really amazing companies and organizations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
