Beyond the Classroom: Joel Kayser (CFA’24, BUTI’17,’18)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Warm-up sessions, solo classes, and ensemble rehearsals. That\u2019s a day in the life for Joel Kayser (CFA\u201924, BUTI\u201917,\u201918) as a trumpet assistant for Boston University Tanglewood Institute<\/a>‘s 2024 Trumpet Workshop. Joel, who recently graduated from CFA with his master\u2019s degree in brass\/trumpet performance<\/a>, was offered the assistantship through his mentor Terry Everson<\/a>, Professor of Trumpet at BU School of Music <\/a>and Director of BUTI’s Trumpet Workshop.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

During the two-week Trumpet Workshop<\/a>, Joel assisted Everson in rehearsals, masterclasses, and more. He led students through trumpet ensemble repertoire and learned how to incorporate different teaching techniques in a masterclass setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joel spoke with CFA about his most memorable moments teaching at BUTI this summer, discovering how much he enjoys teaching students at this stage. Joel looks forward to doing more of this work in his career while pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WITH JOEL KAYSER (CFA’24, BUTI’17’18)<\/h4><\/div>\n

CFA:<\/span> What are your responsibilities as a trumpet assistant for BUTI?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> In my role, I would assist Professor Terry Everson and Grammy-award-winning trumpet player Karin Bliznik<\/a> in rehearsals, masterclasses, getting music, and such. In the first week, Professor Everson and I performed a recital together, where I performed Timofei Dokshizer\u2019s arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue<\/em> by American composer and pianist George Gershwin. In the morning sessions, we would have a group warm-up class, which I would lead during the second week of the workshop and share my thoughts and approach to trumpet playing. We would have a solo class, where I would share my thoughts and work with students on their solo piece(s) in a masterclass setting along with the directors. In the afternoon, we had trumpet ensemble rehearsals where I would conduct and lead students through trumpet ensemble repertoire while giving comments on dynamics, style, etc. I would also be an extra set of ears or play in the group, while one of the directors conducted.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> How did you learn about this opportunity and what steps did you take to secure it?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> I am a proud BUTI alum (\u201817, \u201818) and Professor Everson offered the assistantship to me in Fall 2023 which I happily accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> What are some of your accomplishments from this professional experience?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> Working with some of the most talented high school and young college students across the country on musical repertoire, assisting and teaching alongside the great Professor Terry Everson and Karin Bliznik, and rescuing a bird that was trapped in the birch shed with Karin Bliznik\u2019s assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> Did resources at CFA or BU help you prepare for success? Also, how did your CFA coursework connect with your experience at BUTI?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> Being a graduate student for FA 100 (Doing, Making, & Knowing: The CFA Experience)<\/a> was a great experience and taught me how to lead classes, and discussions, and be a better teacher, which helped prepare me for this assistantship.

In terms of coursework connecting back, the amount of playing I had to do in ensembles, lessons, and chamber music class helped me expand my musical repertoire and learn different styles, making it easier for me to teach and offer advice to young students working on similar or the same repertoire. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> In what ways do you think this career opportunity has helped you prepare for life after CFA?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> Being a trumpet assistant helped hone in my teaching abilities, and I was able to pick up different teaching styles from Terry Everson and Karin Bliznik which I can utilize for my future students. This was also the first time I had ever worked with students in a masterclass setting, and I learned how to incorporate different techniques into this setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> I learned that I really love teaching students at this high of a level, and I hope to continue doing this kind of work in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> Any advice for CFA-ers beginning this type of process in their careers?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> Trust the process, be open-minded, and play as much as you can.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> Joel, what’s next for you?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joel:<\/span> I will be pursuing my DMA at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in the fall!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n
