MEET THE 2024 CFA CONVOCATION STUDENT SPEAKER, EDWARD STURM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Boston University College of Fine Arts is proud to select Edward Sturm (CFA’24) as this year’s Convocation Student Speaker. Edward is currently in his final semester at Boston University, pursuing a BFA in Theatre Arts<\/a> with a minor in History and studies in the Kilachand Honors College<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At BU School of Theatre<\/a>, Edward has collaborated widely as both a dramaturg and performer, and has been distinguished for his talents as a playwright. His full-length play Priscilla<\/em> received a developmental workshop at the Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre<\/a> this past fall. Equally at home in opera, Edward served as the assistant director on Massenet’s Cendrillon<\/a> <\/em>and will continue his directing work this summer at Central City Opera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of the University, Edward has held a variety of artistic and administrative posts at major companies including Actors’ Shakespeare Project, The Glimmerglass Festival, Arcola Theatre, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical<\/em>, and Music Theatre Wichita. He is always excited to explore the ever-expanding possibilities of theatre alongside caring people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I feel really honored to have the chance to speak to a room full of artists who I admire deeply and have grown alongside,” says Edward, who recently spoke with CFA about his favorite moments, what he hopes people remember about his class, and where he’s headed after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are some of your most memorable moments at CFA?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

So much happens so quickly at CFA, I feel like I have lived a dozen lives in the past four years. Certainly, I remember a lot of big moments\u2014my first performance at the Booth Theatre, workshopping a play that I wrote, studying abroad in London. But I think the most memorable moments for me have been those in-between times when I feel most connected to the community: walking home with friends after a show swapping opinions about what we saw, dashing across the street to Target for a snack on a ten-minute break from rehearsal, making big mistakes in class and then laughing about them for weeks afterwards. These are the smaller moments that I will take with me.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What do you want people to remember about the CFA Class of 2024?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I think the resilience our class has shown is unforgettable. Many of us came to BU in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic and managed to forge connections at a time when gathering was nearly impossible. I hope that we are remembered not merely for the circumstances of our arrival, but for what we created here out of that uncertainty. In the Class of 2024, I see a real commitment to building and revitalizing community through art. Our best work is ahead of us, and that is really exciting, too.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What’s next for you, Edward?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Hopefully a few days to catch up on sleep, read a good book, and reflect on these past four years! Starting in June, I will be a resident assistant director at Central City Opera in Colorado. Then in the fall, I will move to New York City.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
