A slightly underground part of that experience for BFA Acting and Theatre Arts performance majors is the opportunity to swap out their Rehearsal and Performance (R&amp;P) experience for a semester in favor of exploring other aspects of production. Usually surrounding assistantships in fields like directing, choreographing, dramaturgy, and playwriting, students find a wide range of assistantship opportunities to shift their perspectives.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"\/cfa\/files\/2024\/03\/Directing-Outside-The-Box_Kira-Gandolfo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/files\/2024\/03\/Directing-Outside-The-Box_Kira-Gandolfo.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/files\/2024\/03\/Directing-Outside-The-Box_Kira-Gandolfo-424x636.jpg 424w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/files\/2024\/03\/Directing-Outside-The-Box_Kira-Gandolfo-666x1000.jpg 666w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><figcaption>Photo courtesy of Kira Gandolfo<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In their sophomore year, senior Theatre Arts Performance major <strong>Kira Gandolfo<\/strong> (CFA\u201924) expressed interest in directing to her faculty mentor, Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/kirsten-greenidge\/\"><strong>Kirsten Greenidge<\/strong><\/a>, head of Theatre Arts and co-chair of Performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s thanks to Greenidge\u2019s mentorship that Kira was able to assistant direct MFA directing candidates in the Next Stage Workshop production of <strong>Charlotte Weinman<\/strong>\u2019s (CFA\u201922) new work <em>Salamander and the Impediment<\/em>. Gandolfo then went on to assistant direct for guest director Patdro Harris in the mainstage production of <em>Fucking A <\/em>by Susan-Lori Parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like, when we are within the School of Theatre, working with each other, there is a kind of a bubble,\u201d says Gandolfo. \u201cWe know so much about each other, and we have a very shared language. But working with someone new and having to understand how they work, what they want out of a process, how they run their rooms, is priceless. Photos courtesy of Gandolfo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This then led to Gandolfo pursuing assisting in her career beyond Boston University, seeking out CFA alum<strong> Sarah Shin<\/strong> (CFA\u201919) to assist in some way on Central Square Theatre\u2019s production of <em>The Chinese Lady<\/em> by Lloyd Suh. Gandolfo aimed to work in the same room as Sarah Shin and the other Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) creatives on the project, and so went out of their way to make it happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She contacted Shin with her interest and became assistant dramaturg to Alison Yueming Qu. \u201cI really took my fate into my own hands with that: I want to work on this, this is something I want to do, therefore I will,\u201d reflects Gandolfo. And they continue to do so, even while acting working on her final productions at BU, Kira is working with Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/kristin-leahey\/\"><strong>Kristin Leahey<\/strong><\/a>, Assistant Professor of Dramatic Literature &amp; Dramaturgy, in Oregon Shakespeare Festival\u2019s production of <em>Much Ado About Nothing<\/em>. Starting out her assisting journey within SOT as a movement\/direction assistant to head of movement, Assistant Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/yo-el-cassell\/\">Yo-EL Cassell<\/a><\/strong> on <em>Colossal<\/em>, and ending most recently with Assistant Movement Directing guest artist Alexandra Beller. Photo courtesy of Emma Weller<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With these projects, Weller says that \u201cit was a mixture of me expressing how much I liked the material my freshman year and just working really hard in the positions I did have, which got me recommended for more,\u201d first expressing to Cassell her love of movement choreography and storytelling which in turn brought her to working on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/featured-work\/colossal\/\">Colossal<\/a><\/em>. Based on her work on that, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/featured-work\/mac-beth\/\">Mac Beth<\/a><\/em> director <strong>Gigi Juras<\/strong> (CFA\u201922) asked her to be movement captain for the project. All this led to Senior Lecturer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/christopher-edwards\/\">Christopher Edwards<\/a><\/strong> reaching out to Weller to work on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/featured-work\/let-the-right-one-in\/\">Let the Right One In<\/a><\/em>, a 2022 School of Theatre co-production with Actors\u2019 Shakespeare Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-end-of-article\">There is no limit to the prospects for undergraduates within SOT, and performance majors exploring assistant directing only brushes the surface.
