By Sophie Yarin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"headline-1\" class=\"wp-block-editorial-headline news-block-editorial-headline is-style-default\">Excerpt<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-editorial-introparagraph news-block-editorial-introparagraph is-style-dropcap-dimensional has-dropcap has-dropcap-color-quaternary\"><div class=\"wp-block-editorial-introparagraph-content\"><p>It\u2019s thesis season for the graduating seniors in the College of Fine Arts&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/visual-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\">School of Visual Arts<\/a>, and this year the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/academics\/degrees-programs\/graphic-design\/bfa\/\" target=\"_blank\">BFA graphic design program<\/a>&nbsp;is faced with a unique challenge: its largest graduating class ever. The order of the day for the 41 graduating seniors has been organizing the more than 160 works into a cohesive show. As it turns out, they have proven themselves more than up to the task as visitors to the 2023 Graphic Design Senior Thesis Exhibition, now on view at the 808 Gallery, will discover.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have a pretty collaborative and familial dynamic, and this dynamic is present in how they have decided to curate their show,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/about\/contact-directions\/directory\/nicholas-rock\/\">Nicholas Rock<\/a>, an assistant professor of art and graphic design at the College of Fine Arts, says of his thesis students. \u201cThey\u2019re celebrating their connections, as well as their individuality and personal perspectives, in their work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s BFA Thesis Exhibitions (the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2023\/bfa-painting-sculpture-printmaking-senior-thesis-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">BFA painting, sculpture, and printmaking show&nbsp;<\/a>running concurrently across the street at the Faye G., Jo, and James Stone Gallery at 855 Comm Ave.) is \u201cEDIFICE.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The task of creating a curatorial theme that embraces the more than 200 works included in both shows fell to Mina Chung (CFA\u201923), Hannah Hong (CFA\u201923), and Jacqueline Mang (CFA\u201923), all graphic design majors and members of the thesis exhibition branding team. \u201cEDIFICE plays on the idea of the home and community we have at CFA, and the foundation that has been laid for our education, careers, passions, and futures,\u201d Chung says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept behind EDIFICE\u2014that the collective artistic practices of each student form a creative scaffold like that of a physical institution\u2014influenced the graphic design exhibition, which Chung says also has an independent brand imprint, \u201cLived In,\u201d&nbsp;which imagines the 808 Gallery as a shared domestic space and each thesis project as a room in a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201croom\u201d in the 808 Gallery occupied by Chung\u2019s thesis\u2014in reality, a table draped in flowers\u2014consists of plantable seed paper postcards and origami flower kits. Photo by Jake Belcher<\/p><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A few yards away, Andreina De La Blanca\u2019s \u201croom\u201d is devoted to the practice of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.ac.uk\/study-at-ual\/short-courses\/stories\/how-to-start-creative-coding\" target=\"_blank\">creative coding<\/a>, a \u201crelatively new\u201d form of programming that prioritizes artistic expression over pure functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De La Blanca\u2019s thesis exhibit consists of a monitor display featuring two interactive games of her own fabrication. De La Blanca (CFA\u201923), who learned the practice only recently,&nbsp;designed these \u201cmini experiences\u201d to reflect the process of going outside one\u2019s comfort zone and confronting uncertainty. Viewers are instructed to step in front of a webcam and interact with the screen, then watch themselves move about on the monitor and respond to prompts designed to confuse and challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn its nature, creative coding can be all about happy accidents and newness,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De La Blanca says that her fascination with the risk and reward of the unknown stems from her experience of immigrating multiple times\u2014first from Venezuela to Madrid, then to Rome, Miami, and finally Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy the end [of each mini experience], I aim to get my point across on change being an enjoyable aspect of life,\u201d she says, \u201ceven if at first it\u2019s something intimidating or unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote news-block-bu-pullquote alignwide is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-quaternary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">We would consider ourselves a media-agnostic graphic design program in that we see tools as tools and encourage students to move in and around them and to constantly leverage their curiosity.
