Per Boston University’s recent announcement, all in-person College of Fine Arts 2020 summer programs have been canceled, including Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI). Deposits will be refunded for all canceled programs. For more details, please review FAQs below.
Summer 2020 Season
Are all BUTI programs canceled for summer 2020?
Yes, all in-person programming for summer 2020 has been canceled.
Has the program been canceled or postponed until next season?
The 2020 season is canceled, not postponed. At this time, we plan to have a full season in Summer 2021.
Why is the season canceled as opposed to postponed?
We—like all of you—have been carefully watching the evolving impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. All of us hope to return to normal activity as soon as possible, but we must continue to prioritize the health and safety of our community. Unfortunately, it has become clear that the restrictions resulting from the pandemic will continue for some time. Although this decision will be disappointing to many, we believe it is necessary to achieve our ultimate goal – to resume the quality in-person programs that are our hallmark.
Will BUTI offer online options?
Our team has been working hard to determine whether online programming is feasible this summer. Since neither the magic of Tanglewood nor a large part of our programs can be replicated online, we will not offer an online curriculum in lieu of in-person programming. However, in the coming months, we will be planning and launching a resource page and special events designed especially for you, aimed at inspiring and helping you continue to grow this summer.
I have already paid my tuition deposit. Will it be refunded?
Yes, the tuition deposit will be fully refunded. Refunds of 2020 tuition deposits were processed during the week of April 13, 2020. It may take up to two weeks for the credit to appear.
How will my tuition deposit be returned to me?
Refunds of 2020 tuition deposits were processed during the week of April 13, 2020 and returned directly to the card with which the payment was made. It may take up to two weeks for the credit to appear.
I have already mailed in payment for the airport shuttle and/or cookout. Will that be refunded?
Checks and credit card payments for cookout/shuttle trips have not been processed, and will not be processed. Credit card information will be shredded, and checks voided and shredded. You may request your check be returned to you via mail by sending a request to email@example.com.
Will my application fee be refunded?
Application fees cannot be refunded because the application and review process have been fully completed.
I pre-ordered tickets to a concert. Will they be refunded?
For all refunds related to ticketing, please contact the BSO box office.
I was offered a scholarship for attendance this summer. How will that be affected?
Because the program has been canceled for summer 2020, all tuition deposits and payments will be refunded, and scholarships will be canceled. Scholarship awards will not be carried over and are not guaranteed for next summer.
Summer 2021 Season
I was accepted and enrolled in BUTI 2020. Can this acceptance be transferred to 2021?
Due to the ever-changing pool of applicants year-to-year, we cannot automatically accept students from 2020 for summer 2021. However, we have removed several barriers to apply for 2021:
- Application fees for students who were accepted in 2020 will be reduced. Fee schedule to be determined and updated at a later date.
- You can use the same videos that you used for your summer 2020 application. You will not be required to re-record for your summer 2021 application, but may do so if you wish.
Neither acceptances nor scholarships that were granted in 2020 are guaranteed or carried over to future years.
This was my last summer to participate because of my age. Will you make exceptions to the age limits?
No. Unfortunately due to the nature of BUTI’s age restrictions, we are not able to make exceptions to the age limits of our programs.
I have already mailed my student life paperwork. Can BUTI keep it and utilize it for summer 2021?
No, forms cannot be kept for next summer. They will be stored until we are able to destroy them securely.
