and Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi Booth Theatre

The 2019 – 2020 season at Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre continues with a production of Marcus Gardley’s …and Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi directed by Sara Katzoff.

Set on the banks of the Mississippi River during the apex of the Civil War, ...and Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi is an excavation of antebellum history told through a poetic reimagining of the myth of Persephone and Demeter. In playwright Marcus Gardley’s own words:  “Jesus Moonwalks is in a lot of ways my signature play. It is based upon a story my great-grandmother used to tell about her father who fled the bonds of slavery and traveled the country in search of his family.”

“Blending personal narrative, Greek and Yoruba mythology, black folktales and biblical iconography, ...and Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi weaves a story of grace, humor, pain and transformation to create a distinctly American quilt.”  – Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle
