BU Trumpet Ensemble at the National Trumpet Competition

The National Trumpet Competition has been providing an educational outlet for the past 25 years to young trumpet players from around the United States. With a yearly competition, masterclasses, and amazing concerts, NTC strives to provide the highest quality atmosphere to showcase these up and coming artists and provide access to some of the world’s premiere trumpet artists and faculty from around the world. 

This year, Professor Terry Everson sent a group to partcipate in the Small Ensemble part of the National Trumpet Competition. They performed “Ice Town” by Mike D’Ambrosio, a piece they discovered on their own last semester. Everson also sent a competitor in the Graduate Solo Division, Aaron Scoccia (MM 17), who performed Alexandra Pakhmutova’s trumpet concerto. All of the students applied themselves indefatigably to both rehearsal and fundraising, providing self-prepared baked goods on School of Music audition days, getting Nud Pob and Chipotle to sponsor “BU Trumpet Ensemble” nights, and creating a GoFundMe page to supplement the support they received from both the School of Music and the College of Fine Arts. According to Everson, “It’s worth mentioning that even students who did not make the trip participated in the fundraising; it was a real community effort!”

During their trip, they also collaborated with members of the New England Conservatory and University of Miami trumpet ensembles to create a very nice video performance (on top of a parking garage!) of Boston musical icon Gunther Schuller’s “Franfare”, which can be viewed below. Throughout their time competing and collaborating, the group performed beautifully, and is an inspiration for trumpeters everywhere!
