{"id":4568,"date":"2018-10-10T14:10:37","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T18:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa-magazine\/?p=4568"},"modified":"2019-01-02T09:53:38","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T14:53:38","slug":"michael-chiklis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa-magazine\/2018\/10\/10\/michael-chiklis\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Chiklis Offers Career Advice"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"color: #5e5e5e; clear: both;\">Artists \u201ccast light on injustices and the state of our society\u201d<\/h2>\n<h4>By Amy Laskowski | Photos by Natasha Moustache<\/h4>\n<p>Golden Globe\u2013 and Emmy Award\u2013winning actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0004821\/\">Michael Chiklis<\/a> had a message for 2018 College of Fine Arts grads: your job is to bring humanity to a tumultuous world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtists are the arbiters, the purveyors of empathy and compassion in this world,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0004821\/\">Chiklis<\/a> (\u201985), speaking at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cfa\/current-students\/commencement\/\">CFA Convocation<\/a> at the Track &amp; Tennis Center. \u201cTrue, we entertain and amuse, but much of that entertainment allows people to think and feel, to discuss and debate, and understand what it\u2019s like to walk a mile in another person\u2019s shoes. We cast light on injustices and the state of our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony may have been on an unseasonably cold and wet afternoon, but the mood was celebratory as Chiklis, best known for starring in the long-running FX drama <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0286486\/\">The Shield<\/a><\/em> and as the <a href=\"http:\/\/fantasticfourmovies.wikia.com\/wiki\/The_Thing_(Story_series)\">Thing<\/a> in Marvel\u2019s <em>Fantastic Four<\/em> franchise, sprinkled his 10-minute speech with humor and several BU references.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UexHn5pgYBE\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">Listen to actor Michael Chiklis&#8217; (\u201985) speech at the CFA Convocation. \u201cMusic, art, theater, dance, film, all of these art forms make the world a far better place,\u201d he told the graduates. \u201cCan you imagine our world without them?\u201d <span class=\"credit\">BU Productions<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The actor won the 2002 Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series and a 2003 Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role as Detective Vic Mackey in <em>The Shield.<\/em> He also directed many of the episodes and was a producer on the series. He can currently be seen in the recurring role of Nathaniel Barnes, captain of the Gotham City Police Department, in the TV series <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox.com\/gotham\/\">Gotham<\/a>.<\/em> He has won a CFA Distinguished Alumni Award and served as the master of ceremonies at the College\u2019s Alumni Awards in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2018\/harvey-young-named-new-cfa-dean\/\">Harvey Young<\/a>, newly appointed dean of CFA, was met with cheers from students as he presided over his first convocation. Young spoke of meeting families who had traveled from around the world to attend this year\u2019s graduation and to proudly celebrate with their graduates. He urged the guests to also remember that the weekend was about celebrating community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA college by definition is an assembly organized around a common initiative with a shared sense of purpose,\u201d he said. \u201cFor days, weeks, months, years, this community of exceptional innovators has gathered to interrogate, to come together to think about what it means to make art, to advocate for the social importance of art, and to contemplate the building of a life that\u2019s filled and fulfilled by the creative arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chiklis referred to his own CFA graduation 33 years ago: then, as today, it was risky to consider a profession in the arts. \u201cNow it\u2019s just straight up crazy,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re all embarking on one of the most uncertain career paths ever. Brave and more important and necessary than ever. Let me explain before I give your parents a heart attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a time when politics, mass media, and social media threaten to overwhelm and desensitize, he said, CFA grads should strive to create art that enlightens and enriches. \u201cMusic, art, theater, dance, film, all of these art forms make the world a far better place,\u201d he said. \u201cCan you imagine our world without them? Seems like another depressing episode of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/series\/the-handmaids-tale-565d8976-9d26-4e63-866c-40f8a137ce5f\">The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/a><\/em> to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chiklis said that when he graduated, opportunities for artists weren\u2019t available to the degree they are today. \u201cNow, stereotypes are being shattered, the molds are being broken, giving way to a new generation of culturally, racially, and spiritually diverse artists that are reaching out to a massive global audience,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is a lot more progress to be made, but the tides are definitely turning. You all offer a unique perspective on the world, so chances are there\u2019s something deep inside of you that will resonate with someone else. As an example, he cited how the classical conservatory training he received at CFA gave him the tools he needed to get through a situation that seemed impossibly difficult in shooting <em>The Fantastic Four<\/em> films. For his role as the Thing, he had to sit in makeup five hours a day as artists glued 60 pounds of latex rubber to his face and body. His body temperature rose, and he felt like he was suffocating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time in my career I wanted to quit something I had worked very hard to get,\u201d Chiklis said. \u201cI had never been claustrophobic, but suddenly I understood the irrational panic of wanting to get out of something and not being able to.\u201d A psychiatrist he consulted suggested he find ways to be present and in the moment, so he drew on the breathing and relaxation techniques and sense memory work he learned at CFA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLo and behold, I was a lot calmer in my suit the next day,\u201d he said. Then, slipping into the Thing\u2019s distinctive voice, he said, \u201cBOOM! It was clobbering time!\u201d as the audience laughed. \u201cI consider that to be one of my greatest triumphs over my life and career, because I was able to use my craft to overcome my fears and a tremendous challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concluding his talk, Chiklis circled back to his theme of empathy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravel, read, and speak to people from all walks about everything\u2026. Don\u2019t unfriend someone because you disagree, because then the dialogue ends and nobody wins\u2026. Be curious, ask questions, and never stop learning and growing. Your work will be better for it, deepened, soulful, more complex. More important, you will be better for it. There is so much more I\u2019d like to tell you.
