“Life in the Age of a Pandemic” Photo Contest Rules

Contest rules


Entrants must be 18 years or older and must be able to confirm they are either Boston University students, faculty, staff, or alumni, or Boston Medical Center employees. Winners must be able to provide proof of their identity to accept their prize.

Submission requirements:

  • Must be an original photo taken by the entrant
  • Image (size requirement- at least 300 dpi, winners may be contacted to request higher resolution copies for display purposes)
  • Accepted formats include .jpg, .png, .tiff, .pdf
  • Image title, date, & location
  • Photo must have been taken between December 2019 and now 
  • 150 word description of why this image represents pandemic experience for you
  • Sign statement below on authenticity, permission and media release 

Submissions that do not meet these requirements will be disqualified.


  • First prize: iPad mini (64B, Space grey) ($500 value)
  • Second prize: GoPro Hero10 (black) camera ($250 value)
  • 2 Popular choice winners: Jabra Elite 4 Active wireless earbuds ($125 value each)
  • Winners’ photos will be displayed at an upcoming CEID event as well as on CEID’s social media and website.

Prizes will be delivered following the announcement of winners, based on coordination with winners. No substitutions will be allowed and prizes may not be redeemed for cash or other consideration. Taxes, where applicable, are the sole responsibility of the winner.

Entry period:

  • Contest opens: February 9, 2024
  • Submission deadline: March 22, 2024
  • Popular choice voting: April 8-12, 2024
  • Winners announced: April 19, 2024

 Selection of winners:

First and second prize winners will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of faculty from Boston University’s Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEID) and College of Communications (COM). Photos will be judged on technical aspects, alignment with theme, artistic appeal and universality to select the top two winners.

Two popular choice winners will be voted on by the public from a selection of 10 photos chosen by CEID faculty and staff.


By submitting photos or other materials to the competition, entrants attest that the content is original, does not plagiarize from anyone or infringe a copyright or trademark, does not violate anybody’s rights and is not libelous or otherwise unlawful or misleading. Entrants agree that Boston University may use their submission in all media, and may edit, remove, modify, publish, transmit, and display it.
