{"id":7631,"date":"2023-03-27T10:13:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T14:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/?p=7631"},"modified":"2023-05-30T11:05:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T15:05:00","slug":"student-designed-policy-on-use-of-generative-ai-adopted-by-data-sciences-faculty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/2023\/03\/27\/student-designed-policy-on-use-of-generative-ai-adopted-by-data-sciences-faculty\/","title":{"rendered":"BU Today: Student-Designed Policy on Use of Generative AI Adopted by CDS Faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Expert philosopher and ethicist, Wesley Wildman, discusses the ethical use of artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT during a classroom project addressing how students can use it and how faculty should grade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Excerpt from BU Today: News, Opinion, Community<\/p>\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/author\/joel-brown\/\">Joel Brown<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in January, when ChatGPT started making news as the artificial intelligence tool of the future, Wesley Wildman tore up his lesson plan and instead assigned his undergraduate students in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cds\/courses\/cds-ds-380\/\">Data, Society and Ethics<\/a> to write a policy for responsible use of generative AI programs in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few weeks later, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/\">Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences<\/a> has adopted that class project as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/culture-community\/conduct\/gaia-policy\/\">department\u2019s official policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #016291;\">\u201cIt\u2019s from the first week of the first BU course on the ethics of computing and data sciences, in our first semester in the new building,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/people\/deans-and-senior-administration\/azer-bestavros\/\">Azer Bestavros<\/a>, BU\u2019s inaugural associate provost for computing and data sciences. \u201cI could not have written a better script.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/profile\/wesley-j-wildman\/\">Wildman<\/a> is a professor of philosophy, theology, and ethics and of computing and data sciences, who splits his time between the School of Theology and the Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences. The 47 students in his class planned to abide by their Generative AI Assistance (GAIA) Policy themselves and thought it might serve as a starting point for others around campus.
