{"id":7558,"date":"2023-03-24T13:12:37","date_gmt":"2023-03-24T17:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/?p=7558"},"modified":"2023-04-14T11:15:38","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T15:15:38","slug":"cds-adopts-generative-ai-chatgpt-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/2023\/03\/24\/cds-adopts-generative-ai-chatgpt-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"CDS Adopts Generative AI Assistance Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/image-636x421.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"283\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7571 \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/image-636x421.png 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/image-768x508.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/image-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/image.png 828w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the November 2022 launch of OpenAI&#8217;s ChatGPT, the AI text generator has gained an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/chatgpt-sets-record-fastest-growing-user-base-analyst-note-2023-02-01\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> monthly active users.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaning on the expertise of faculty and the discipline&#8217;s fundamental openness to embrace the large language model, Boston University\u2019s Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences (CDS) has taken groundbreaking steps to create and adopt a policy on the use of generative AI tools in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, March 21, CDS Associate Provost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/profile\/azer-bestavros\/\">Azer Bestavros<\/a> announced that by a unanimous vote of its faculty members, CDS developed and officially adopted the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/culture-community\/conduct\/gaia-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generative AI Assistance (GAIA) Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCDS is instituting a policy that will help our community navigate the brave new world of teaching and learning with the assistance of large language models and generative AI technologies,\u201d says Bestavros, Warren Distinguished Professor of Computer Science. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen it comes to regulating the classroom use of a technology, it was only proper for CDS to take the lead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The GAIA policy is designed specifically for coursework and includes guidelines for computing and data science students and educators. Students are encouraged to learn how to use AI tools \u2014 to enhance, not damage\u2014their developing writing, coding, and communications skills. For educators, the policy creates a baseline to ensure fair grading for both those who do and do not use AI tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The GAIA policy stresses transparency, fairness, and honoring relevant stakeholders such as students eager to learn and build careers, families who send students to the university, professors who are charged with teaching vital skills, the university that has a responsibility to attest to student competency with diplomas, future employers who invest in student because of their abilities and character, and colleagues who lack privileged access to valuable resources.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; Excerpt from CDS GAIA Policy<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDS-wide policy is largely based on a blueprint that resulted from students\u2019 work on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2023\/why-chatgpt-is-both-exciting-and-unsettling-for-students-and-faculty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first case study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the inaugural offering of CDS\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cds\/courses\/cds-ds-380\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data, Society and Ethics (DS 380) course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by Wesley Wildman, professor of Philosophy, Theology, and Ethics, and of Computing and Data Sciences, and CDS Chair of Faculty Affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe DS 380 class didn&#8217;t set out to create a CDS-wide policy; we set out to develop a policy that we could use in our class, and that we could share the blueprint with others for their consideration,\u201d says Wildman. \u201cIt turned out to be useful for discussion, and\u00a0eventually useful even as a policy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/culture-community\/conduct\/gaia-policy\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-24-at-6.55.44-AM-636x222.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"404\" height=\"141\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7561 \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-24-at-6.55.44-AM-636x222.png 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-24-at-6.55.44-AM-768x269.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-24-at-6.55.44-AM-300x105.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-24-at-6.55.44-AM.png 932w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/a>These blueprints and the challenges and opportunities of embracing generative AI in the academy were discussed in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/2023\/02\/14\/chatgpt-panel-discussion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on \u201cLearning to Think\u201d with assistive AI and further<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0refined based on feedback from our Academic Policy Committee and from the CDS faculty members at large.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/profile\/mark-crovella\/\">Mark Crovella<\/a>, a professor in both Computer Science and the Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences and Chair of Academic Affairs in CDS, says the policy&#8217;s foundation is grounded in teaching students to approach problems that data science can help answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The students and faculty in CDS are in contact with the technologies behind generative AI on a daily basis, and CDS explicitly considers the ethical use of data science tools to be part of its curriculum and mission,&#8221; says Crovella, chair of the CDS Academic Policy Committee. &#8220;So our students and faculty and particularly in this case, Wesley\u2019s class, are well equipped to think about how best to incorporate generative AI into classroom activities.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When describing the importance of adopting generative AI policy and the role of educators, Wildman says every aspect of the university is affected by generative AI and by creating policy. &#8220;CDS challenges the rest of the university to think through how they can take generative AI seriously, and still maintain academic standards.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs university faculty and administrators, we fulfill our sacred duty to our students, their parents, and their future employers by digging deep, rethinking our pedagogies, and showing students how to respond to generative AI with honor, moral agility, and intellectual creativity,&#8221; says Wildman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Bestavros, the policy development and adoption process is consistent with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/culture-community\/pledge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDS&#8217; professional pledge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aspiring &#8220;to improve public understanding of computing technologies and their potential for good and ill.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to give a shout-out to our community for the unique way in which it approached this issue and how it converged on this policy,&#8221; says Bestavros. &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This communal approach involving all stakeholders exemplifies the participatory approach to regulating technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Resources &amp;
