{"id":1432,"date":"2021-08-12T14:46:02","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T18:46:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/?p=1432"},"modified":"2023-06-01T23:06:57","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T03:06:57","slug":"mayank-varia-joins-cds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/2021\/08\/12\/mayank-varia-joins-cds\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayank Varia Joins CDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences is pleased to announce the appointment of Mayank Varia to associate professor, beginning September 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former research associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at Boston University, Mayank works in the fields of theoretical and applied cryptography. Specifically, he studies the societal, legal, and public policy impacts of advances in cybersecurity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to joining BU, he worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, designing and evaluating high performance privacy-enhancing data search technology, creating information theoretic metrics to quantify privacy, and developing algorithms to capture linguistic provenance automatically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayank received his PhD in Mathematics from MIT in 2010. In addition to his faculty role, Mayank is co-director of BU&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/riscs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Reliable Information Systems &amp; Cyber Security<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a founding member of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/centers-initiatives-labs\/cyber-alliance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyber Security, Law, and Society Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fellow in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ihsip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute for Health System Innovation &amp; Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a faculty mentor of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/lernet\/cyber\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codebreakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outreach program. He also is a member of the U.S. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/evidence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advisory Committee on Data for Evidence Building<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and chairs the legal subtask group of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/bigdata\/task-teams\/privacy\/index.cshtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations Privacy Preserving Techniques Task Team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Join us in welcoming Professor Mayank Varia!
