She writes that antitrust regulators in the United States and Europe are right to investigate Big Tech-AI partnerships. Even if AI markets remain competitive today, history and economics show that the Big Tech companies will push to monopolize segments of the AI market if given the opportunity. The investigations serve as a deterrent against anticompetitive behavior and give the regulators access to the knowledge and information that will be necessary to detect anticompetitive patterns as the AI market matures.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span>Excerpt from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.promarket.org\">ProMarket<\/a>: Antitrust authorities in the United States and around the world have expressed keen interest in the growing web of relationships between dominant tech firms and artificial intelligence (AI) developers. The relationships have come fast and furiously, accompanied by hefty price tags and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/08\/technology\/ai-start-ups-google-microsoft-amazon.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">dressed up in a variety of transactional forms<\/a><span>. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/ftc-launches-inquiry-into-generative-ai-investments-partnerships-2024-01-25\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">firms<\/a><span> present the deals as innovation and efficiency-enhancing and characterize the AI marketplace as highly competitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Regulators appear unconvinced. Through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/P246201_AI_Investments_6%28b%29_Order_and_Resolution.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">information requests<\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/amazon-slash-anthropic-partnership-merger-inquiry\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">investigations<\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoritedelaconcurrence.fr\/en\/press-release\/generative-artificial-intelligence-autorite-issues-its-opinion-competitive\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">opinions<\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/ai-joint-statement.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">policy statements<\/a><span>, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/SPEECH_24_3550\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">public comments<\/a><span>, regulators have made clear that they will not sit on the sidelines as the firms jockey for dominant positions in these evolving markets.
