We are happy to share that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/5164-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Katharine Lusk<\/a>, Co-Director of the Boston University Initiative on Cities, a<span>nd\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/people\/deans-and-senior-administration\/azer-bestavros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azer Bestavros<\/a><span>, Associate Provost for the\u00a0Faculty of Computing\u00a0<\/span>&amp; Data Sciences (CDS), were recently awarded a grant from the New Venture Fund to delve into the current state of the field of public interest technology.<\/p>\n<p>The research team will conduct a comprehensive scan of public interest technology (PIT) activities taking place at the 43 PIT-UN member institutions, including 36 existing and seven new members. There are three main goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide a rigorous and comprehensive baseline of student-oriented, faculty-oriented and institutional activities, including related courses and degrees, and practices being undertaken to advance the field of PIT<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the degree to which \u201cpublic interest technology\u201d is entering the academic lexicon<\/li>\n<li>Understand the trajectory of member institutions from \u2018nascent\u2019 to \u2018mature\u2019, and associated activities and practices, in order to provide a roadmap for new members<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This funding furthers the momentum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/research-impact\/ds4g\/\">Data Science for Good<\/a>, a CDS initiative which leverages the expertise in BU&#8217;s 17 schools and colleges to accelerate the public interest technology work of faculty and students.<\/p>\n<p>The IOC is currently hiring graduate and undergraduate research assistants to support this project this summer.
