But in a world in which a growing swath of algorithms guide decisions on everything from hiring people for jobs to determining who is eligible for life insurance, how should governments, data scientists, and societies at large think about ensuring the outputs of these systems are fair?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That question was the tentpole for an October 13, 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pitun2023\/program\/roundtable-on-algorithmic-fairness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roundtable discussion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cAlgorithmic Fairness: Regulation, Research, and the Reality of Implementation,\u201d hosted at the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences (CDS). The discussion was one session in a two-day <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pitun2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Interest Technology University Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> annual conference in which participants explored how universities can partner with government, the private sector and community organizations to foster public interest technologies and address modern challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discussion highlighted both how challenging it is to eliminate bias from algorithms \u2013 and how essential the work remains. This is an approach that some regulators use and it risks missing unjust outcomes. \u201cThe impact of the algorithm, the social consequence of integrating the tool is not the same as the quality of the facility,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, Fazelpour, whose research focuses on issues of justice, diversity and reliability in data-driven and AI technologies, said he recommends examining the lifecycle of an algorithm and injecting diverse viewpoints into its creation. For example, reviewing the design, development and deployment process ensures the integrity of choices data scientists make. And including a variety of technical and business backgrounds on the development and deployment teams elevates the quality of algorithms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Employing diverse technical experts safeguards fairness and yields business benefits<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massmutual.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.massmutual.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MassMutual<\/a>,<\/span><\/span> a mutual life insurance and financial services company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massmutual.com\/about-us\/our-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founded in 1851<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/massmutual-gives-3-million-to-cds-faculty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supporter of BU Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences\u2019 responsible use of data research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/2023\/08\/18\/power-of-mentorship-data-days-for-good\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student experiential learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and broadening participation programs, underwriters were calculating risks long before computers and AI came along. Today, the company employs nearly 100 people focused on data science from backgrounds including science, technology, math and engineering, said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kjfitzpatrick8\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevin Fitzpatrick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head of privacy, data and artificial intelligence governance at MassMutual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing AI-based algorithms has enabled the company to introduce life insurance policy applications that can tell customers if they are approved within a day, instead of waiting weeks for paperwork and getting a medical exam, Fitzpatrick said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When it comes to reviewing algorithms for fairness, MassMutual relies on its multidisciplinary approach and data and AI governance policies. The company also employs experts in medicine, law and actuarial science, so it ensures it complies &#8211; and often exceeds &#8211; applicable laws, Fitzpatrick said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ContentPasted1\">\u201cThe key is this cross-functional approach. We\u2019re engaging with lots of different disciplines early and throughout the process <\/span><span class=\"ContentPasted1\">to deployment and ongoing operations<\/span><span class=\"ContentPasted1\">,\u201d Fitzpatrick said. He added that he leads a business function dedicated to this work \u2013 a demonstration of the company\u2019s commitment to algorithmic fairness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Countries\u2019 adoption of AI algorithms requires constant vigilance to ensure fairness<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments implementing algorithms and AI systems to guide decision-making raises intense concerns, because the adoption of ethical approaches varies widely, said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mervehickok\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merve Hickok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, president of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caidp.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for AI and Digital Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among its projects, the Center issues <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caidp.org\/reports\/aidv-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an annual report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> documenting countries\u2019 AI policies and how they stack up against democratic principles. Hickock also led an effort to establish ethical AI guidelines \u2013 work that the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) used in its ethical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oecd.ai\/en\/ai-principles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou would be amazed at the difference between what a country commits to and what it actually does on the ground. [They say] we respect human rights, but then go and use AI and algorithmic systems, automated decision-making systems and predictive policing, and facial recognition for mass surveillance,\u201d Hickok said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another challenge for policymakers: ensuring due process when a person feels wronged by the result of an algorithm. \u201cPublic agencies have a duty to ensure due process. If you\u2019re an individual subjected to an outcome by an algorithmic decision system, can you actually contest the decision?\u201d she asked. The lack of such a process has the potential to harm citizens and communities at large, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>About the Moderator:<\/h3>\n<p><a
