Associate Professor of the Practice

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) invites applications for the inaugural MassMutual non-tenure-track Associate Professor of the Practice in Computing & Data Sciences, beginning as early as January 1, 2022. Qualifications required of all applicants include extensive experience commensurate with a PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by contemporary, real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Seeded by a $1-million gift from MassMutual to Boston University, the MassMutual Associate Professor of the Practice will teach four courses in core data science subjects per academic year, and will be responsible for supervision of directed studies and capstone projects for undergraduate and graduate students, including those pursued in collaboration with external partners. The successful candidate will take on a key leadership role in overseeing programming associated with this extraordinary partnership. This includes mentoring students in the MassMutual Externship program, leading CDS outreach and community-building events, and contributing to CDS’s overall mission of leveraging computing and data science for real-world, societally relevant impact in collaboration with partnering organizations at the University and beyond.

Clinical Assistant Professor

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences invites applications for a non-tenure-track Clinical Assistant Professor to serve as its Director of Undergraduate Studies beginning as soon as July 1, 2022. Qualifications required of all applicants include extensive experience commensurate with a PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a clinical faculty member in CDS at the rank of assistant professor, carrying a teaching load of three introductory or intermediate undergraduate courses per year, covering foundational and core data science subjects. As Director of Undergraduate Studies, the successful candidate will play a key role in the academic advising, mentorship, and career counseling of students, and in the development of the instructional capacity supporting CDS’s undergraduate programs. Initial appointment will be for a renewable three-year term with future longer-term appointments expected.

Adjunct Lecturer

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences invites applications for non-tenure-track part-time lecturer positions, beginning as soon as January 1, 2022. Qualifications include a Masters degree (required) or PhD degree (preferred), or equivalent experience in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and curricular innovation.

CDS is launching its signature undergraduate BS degree program in Data Science. Successful candidates will contribute to the roll out of this program, carrying out a workload equivalent to teaching at least one introductory or intermediate undergraduate course covering foundational and core data science topics, including programming and software engineering, data structures and algorithms, and the mathematical underpinnings of data mining and machine learning. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications, teaching responsibilities may extend to practicum courses in software engineering, data mining, machine learning, and AI.
