{"id":9519,"date":"2013-04-26T13:00:46","date_gmt":"2013-04-26T17:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?p=9519"},"modified":"2016-11-08T09:35:22","modified_gmt":"2016-11-08T14:35:22","slug":"9519","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/9519\/","title":{"rendered":"Two CAS Professors Elected to Academy of Arts and Sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAS Professor of Economics Larry Epstein, a pioneer in the field of decision theory, and Aurelio Professor of Scripture Emerita Paula Fredriksen, an expert on the history of ancient Christianity, have been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). They join some of the world&#8217;s most accomplished leaders from academia, business, public affairs, the humanities, and the arts.\u00a0The list of the new members is located at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/members.aspx\">https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/members.aspx<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Epstein studies the choices people make in different situations to find common behaviors that should underlie their choices regardless of the situation. Decision theory is part of the broader field of behavioral economics. Fredriksen has published widely on the social and intellectual history of ancient Christianity, and on pagan-Jewish-Christian relations in the Graeco-Roman world. Election to the Academy represents a strong acknowledgement of Epstein and Fredriksen&#8217;s contributions to their fields.<\/p>\n<p>One of the nation\u2019s most prestigious honorary societies, the Academy is also a leading center for independent policy research. Members contribute to Academy publications and studies of science and technology policy, energy and global security, social policy and American institutions, and the humanities, arts, and education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElection to the Academy honors individual accomplishment and calls upon members to serve the public good,\u201d said Academy President Leslie C.
