{"id":85127,"date":"2025-04-22T17:02:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T21:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?p=85127"},"modified":"2025-04-28T10:22:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T14:22:18","slug":"cas-physicists-receive-breakthrough-prize-in-fundamental-physics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/cas-physicists-receive-breakthrough-prize-in-fundamental-physics\/","title":{"rendered":"CAS physicists receive Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Grace Sferrazza (CAS\u201926,\u00a0COM\u201926)<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourteen members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/research\/experimental-particle-physics\/\">Boston University\u2019s High Energy Experimental Physics group<\/a>\u2014along with along with 13,000 other researchers from over 70 countries\u2014have received the <a href=\"https:\/\/breakthroughprize.org\/News\/91\">2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics<\/a> for their work in particle physics at CERN\u2019s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis recognition is not just about a singular discovery\u2014it\u2019s a celebration of the collaborative spirit and the lasting impact of institutions like BU in one of the most ambitious scientific undertakings of our time,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/zeynep-demiragli\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Zeynep<\/span> <span>Demiragli<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, associate professor of physics. \u201cThe Breakthrough Prize was awarded to the CERN experiments, and BU is proud to have played a key role through its long-standing involvement in both the CMS and ATLAS collaborations.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment4251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment4251\" style=\"width: 646px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/files\/2025\/04\/image001-1-636x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"297\" class=\"wp-image-4251 size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/files\/2025\/04\/image001-1-636x297.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/files\/2025\/04\/image001-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment4251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>BU Physicists Celebrate 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CERN, or the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a research laboratory that uses large, complex scientific instruments, particularly particle accelerators and detectors, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/science\/accelerators\/large-hadron-collider\">Large Hadron Collider (LHC)<\/a>, to study the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that govern their interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BU researchers were part of two of the four experiments conducted at CERN that received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/2025\/04\/15\/bu-physicists-celebrate-2025-breakthrough-prize-in-fundamental-physics\/\">Breakthrough Prize<\/a> in Fundamental Physics, also known as the \u201cOscars of Science,\u201d which recognizes individuals in the fields of life sciences, fundamental physics, and mathematics who have made profound contributions to human knowledge.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two experiments were \u201cA Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS) Collaboration\u201d and the \u201cCompact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with <span>Demiragli<\/span>, Professors of Physics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/lawrence-r-sulak\/\">Lawrence Sulak<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/james-rohlf\/\">James Rohlf<\/a>, Associate Professor of Physics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/indara-suarez\/\">Indara Suarez<\/a>, Assistant Professors of Physics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/frank-golf\/\">Frank Golf<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/david-sperka\/\">David Sperka<\/a>, and Adjunct Professors of Physics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/tiziano-camporesi\/\">Tiziano Camporesi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/chiara-mariotti\/\">Chiara Mariotti<\/a> were involved in the CMS Collaboration. BU was also well represented in the ATLAS Collaboration with\u00a0<\/span>Professor of Physics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/john-butler\/\">John Butler, <\/a>Professor Emeritus of Physics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/profile\/steve-ahlen\/\">Steve Ahlen<\/a>,\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.bu.edu\/sites\/atlas\/about\/\">research scientists<\/a>\u00a0James Shank, Saul Yousset, and Yan Zhen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI came to BU to build these future experiments,\u201d said Suarez. \u201cIt&#8217;s really a team effort that has allowed BU to be a very noticeable presence on the CMS experiment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CMS and ATLAS experiments investigate properties of the Higgs boson\u2014a fundamental particle first predicted in 1964 and proven to exist with the first run of experimental data from the CMS experiment in 2012\u2014and pose new scientific questions about the Standard Model\u2014the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevailing theory of particle physics that describes all known particles and forces in the universe\u2014and<\/span>\u00a0the relationship between the Higgs boson and dark matter.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prize money, including a million dollars each awarded to CMS and ATLAS, will support the experiments and future research with a third run of data to occur at the end of the decade.
