When it comes to the Master’s in Statistical Practice (<\/span>MSSP<\/span><\/a>) program at Boston University, one element consistently tops the list of what makes it unique: the <\/span>Statistics Practicum.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 In the Practicum you begin statistical practice a few weeks after the first day of classes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get Your Hands Dirty with Real Projects<\/b><\/p>\n

The Statistics Practicum is a two-semester, team-taught experience that throws you right into the action. Forget contrived problems \u2013 you’ll be working on <\/span>live projects<\/b> as statistical consultants for real clients within the BU research community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The MSSP Consulting Service operates year-round, collaborating with roughly 70 clients annually. You’ll be part of a consulting team led by experienced teaching fellows (PhD students in statistics), all under the guidance of Professor <\/span>Masanao Yajima<\/span><\/a>. Before diving in, both fellows and students undergo a month of intensive training to ensure everyone’s on the same page.<\/span><\/p>\n

Half of your class sessions are dedicated to consultant team project presentations. This fosters collaboration among your peers and provides valuable feedback opportunities from faculty and other students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond BU: Partner Projects Broaden Your Horizons<\/b><\/p>\n

The Practicum goes beyond the BU walls. You’ll also tackle <\/span>semester-long Partner Projects<\/b> with external organizations. These projects are mentored by MSSP faculty\u00a0 and culminate in deliverables tailored to each partner’s specific needs. Imagine creating a working R package, simulating the financial impact of data policies for a multinational company, or evaluating the effectiveness of sensors for athletic training!<\/span><\/p>\n
