{"id":81901,"date":"2024-09-18T13:22:53","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T17:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?p=81901"},"modified":"2024-09-18T14:19:10","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T18:19:10","slug":"astronomer-merav-opher-named-agu-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/astronomer-merav-opher-named-agu-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"Astronomer Merav Opher named AGU fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/astronomy\/profile\/merav-opher\/\">Professor of Astronomy Merav Opher<\/a> has been elected as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agu.org\/honors-home\/announcement\/union-fellows\">fellow<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agu.org\/\">American Geophysical Union (AGU)<\/a>, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">international scientific association that seeks to promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Fellows program recognizes AGU members who have made exceptional contributions to Earth and space science through a breakthrough, discovery, or innovation in their field. She studies how stars interact with their surrounding, how the solar system interacts with the local interstellar medium, and the interaction of extra-solar planets with their host stars. In particular, she is interested in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">understanding how the location of the Sun in the interstellar medium affects the heliosphere\u2014a barrier that protects planets from interstellar radiation\u2014and what that means for life on Earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A faculty member in<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0BU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/csp\/profile\/merav-opher\/\">Center for Space Physics<\/a>, Opher <\/span>is also the<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>principal investigator of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/shield-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SHIELD DRIVE Science Center<\/a><span>, a NASA-funded center with more than 40 leading scientists across a dozen institutions. She is also<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the only female investigator on <a href=\"http:\/\/voyager.jpl.nasa.gov\/\">NASA\u2019s\u00a0<em>Voyager<\/em> spacecraft mission<\/a>\u00a0and co-investigator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/new-horizons\/\">New Horizon Mission<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy research has always pushed the envelope and proposed new ideas,\u201d Opher said. \u201cI am so honored to be recognized by my peers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opher said that in order to be nominated as an AGU Fellow, scientists must give back to the scientific community, in addition to making \u201cbreakthrough\u201d contributions in research.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a scientist who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identifies as LGTBQ, she seeks to bring new, diverse voices to the scientific community, including women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and scientists from unrepresented cultural and racial backgrounds. She said the heliophysics community is, for the most part, mostly white and male; it is also aging, necessitating the need to train the next generation of space physics workers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opher said that the best computer codes and standard theories fail to explain current observations of the heliosphere, so there is a &#8220;real need&#8221; to bring &#8220;outside-of-the-box&#8221; ideas and a new vision to her field. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through SHIELD,\u00a0 she has recruited and mentored several younger researchers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opher was awarded the prestigious Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship as the William Bentinck-Smith Fellow from 2021 to 2022 and as the William Bentinck-Smith Fellow from 2021 to 2022.
