Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are thrilled to announce the inaugural recipients of the CAS Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, Leadership (IDEAL) awards. These awards celebrate the impactful efforts of individuals and groups whose contributions exemplify recognizing and responding to inequity, exclusion, and marginalization through thoughtful and innovative approaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jena DiMaggio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PhD candidate in the Department of English<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/Picture1-e1683647461179-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-70874 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/Picture1-e1683647461179-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/Picture1-e1683647461179-320x323.png 320w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/Picture1-e1683647461179-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/Picture1-e1683647461179.png 325w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>One nominator writes, Jena is \u201ca fierce advocate for improving the department\u2019s expression of diversity and inclusion\u201d and their impact \u201csupporting their fellow graduate students, in particular.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the first graduate representative of English\u2019s Diversity and Inclusion Committee Jena advocated to secure extra funding for MA students of color. This advocacy improved access for a wider range of students and resulted in the department\u2019s most diverse MA and first-year PhD class ever. At a time when the program was undergoing considerable transition in leadership and structure, Rachel had been a steady, passionate presence, going out of her way as a student organizer to help shape the direction of the department towards being increasingly vital and student-centric.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Rachel Edwards is the administrator of the African American &amp; Black Diaspora Studies Program at Boston University. As program administrator, Rachel oversees day-to-day program operations including graduate and undergraduate recruitment and support, course scheduling and maintenance, public programming and events, and financial management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Prior to this position, Rachel worked in various programmatic, operations, and communications roles across the non-profit and public sectors. Her professional focus is equity in higher education, and she is passionate about catalyzing system-change to improve access and outcomes for all students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nishaat Mukadam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Clinical Psychology graduate student<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/nishaat-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-70875 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/nishaat-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/nishaat-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Nominators noted a \u201cconsistent and clear pattern of commitment to DEI in her research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nishaat works within a multidisciplinary and intercollegiate research group. The group uses functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a portable method of collecting brain activity data. Through her involvement in its Inclusivity Project Nishaat has volunteered to lead the effort to recruit more diverse populations for imaging studies. Through this the research team hopes to collect data from individuals whose skin pigmentation and hair texture make it more difficult to get a good fNIRS signal correcting practices that have historically limited inclusion of persons of color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her clinical training and experiences as a graduate student led her to note the need in the clinic for supervision specific to BIPOC therapists and the dynamics they experience in therapy sessions with patients. These recommendations led to curricular changes in the practicum curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her recommenders listed these among several and concluded that \u201cher commitment to DEI is aspirational and has the potential to influence multiple fields of research and clinical care for the better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Indara Suarez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/indara-e1683647526862-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-70876 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/indara-e1683647526862-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/indara-e1683647526862-320x320.png 320w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/indara-e1683647526862-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/05\/indara-e1683647526862.png 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Nominators wrote \u201cher deep commitment to increasing diversity here at BU, as well as her increasingly powerful voice at the National and International level in conversations about DEI and STEM.\u201d Her nominators recognized her contributions to undergraduate research, recruiting and supporting underrepresented students, mentoring students, and advancing equity and advocacy in the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was first noted for advancing the Physics Department\u2019s NSF-funded BU-PRO Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program which was recognized as an important opportunity to bring STEM students into the Physics community from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, Professor Suarez\u2019s leadership has also been \u201ccrucial in recruiting a diverse set of students\u201d utilizing her contacts at multiple institutions and professional organizations resourcefully. She was also pivotal in helping develop a program that showed participants paths to success while building skills and developing camaraderie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third, in her research group, Indara is recognized as \u201cplaying a leading role as mentor to an unusually large number of undergraduate researchers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, her active community engagement was noted including co-organizing and speaking during a day of reflection at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in support of Black Lives Matter events; serving as a panelist at Globalminded, an international network promoting inclusive success for all students; and active involvement with Graduate Women in Science and Engineering BU Day of Diversity in STEM@Boston University, the BU Artemis program, and the 2023 Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are thrilled to announce the inaugural recipients of the CAS Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, Leadership (IDEAL) awards.
