{"id":66000,"date":"2023-01-17T16:29:55","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T21:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?p=66000"},"modified":"2023-01-17T16:29:55","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T21:29:55","slug":"bu-hosts-its-20th-annual-classics-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/bu-hosts-its-20th-annual-classics-day\/","title":{"rendered":"BU Hosts its 20th Annual Classics Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ashley Duong (COM`25)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In early December, several hundred high school students converged on campus to glean collegiate insight on the ancient world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event, the Boston University Annual Classics Day, has been held annually for the past two decades. A collaboration with the Massachusetts Junior Classical League, the event brings students interested in classics to Boston University for a day of seminars and events led by classics graduate students and faculty. Some years, as many as 800 students have attended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful opportunity for us to integrate the study of the ancient world from middle school level, up to the faculty,\u201d said Stephen Scully, professor of classical studies and director of graduate studies, who started the event 20 years ago with Janet Fillion, a teacher at Boston Latin Academy. \u201cIt\u2019s a great integration of students, high school teachers, our graduate students, and our faculty to all think together \u2026 about classical themes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, December 1, 2022, 351 high school students convened in the George Sherman Union ballroom for lectures\u00a0 by several classics professors, along with\u00a0 graduate students Peter Kotigua and Ilse van Rooyen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theme for this year\u2019s Classics Day was \u201cA Day in the Life,\u201d which the high school students elected themselves while registering for the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Uden, a BU associate professor of classical studies and department chair, who helped organize the event, says the focus was, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the lives of the marginalized in the ancient world: children, the enslaved, foreigners, women.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uden and Scully said the annual event leaves a lasting impression on students, and has inspired many to apply to BU.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a vital form of outreach for us,\u201d said Uden. \u201cIt\u2019s a way for us to show potential applicants to BU what we do in the humanities, and for them to experience, even briefly, a classics class on the university campus.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lasting impression extends to professors, as well, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s thrilling at all levels,\u201d said Scully. \u201cIt\u2019s thrilling for art or a time of fun \u2014 for the students, the high school and middle students, to see people who are going for their advanced degrees or professors talking about these things.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In early December, several hundred high school students converged on campus to glean collegiate insight on the ancient world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":21329,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[8],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66000"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/21329"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=66000"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66000\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":66002,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66000\/revisions\/66002"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=66000"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=66000"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=66000"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
