{"id":64228,"date":"2022-11-11T11:00:34","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T16:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?p=64228"},"modified":"2022-11-17T14:10:21","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T19:10:21","slug":"a-digital-home-for-poetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/a-digital-home-for-poetry\/","title":{"rendered":"A Digital Home for Poetry"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>By Rich Barlow<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a quarter century, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.favoritepoem.org\/\">Favorite Poem Project<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has amassed a sprawling video library of Americans reading and discussing their favorite verse. Many of these modern recordings of this ancient art can be found on the project\u2019s website and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/FavoritePoem\">YouTube channel<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0but many others \u201clive in a static space unavailable to the general public,\u201d says Annette S. Frost, the project\u2019s director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That virtual padlock has now been hacksawed. Observing its 25th anniversary, the project has unveiled a new website with a new Robert Pinsky Poetry Archive. Named for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/english\/profile\/robert-pinsky\/\">project\u2019s founder<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014former US poet laureate, William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor of English at the College of Arts &amp; Sciences, and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/\">Creative Writing Program<\/a>\u2014the online Archive gathers about 300 Project videos and 100-plus articles, including media coverage (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PBS Newshour<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lectures and conversations from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/artofpoetry\/\">University\u2019s Art of Poetry<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MOOC (massive open online course), <a href=\"https:\/\/robertpinsky.wordpress.com\/\">Pinsky\u2019s online Poetry Forum<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/calendar\/robert-lowell-memorial-lectures\/\">BU\u2019s Robert Lowell Memorial Poetry Readings<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0which bring poets to campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2022\/10\/pinsky-for-web.jpg\" alt=\"Pinsky\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignright wp-image-63419 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/10\/pinsky-for-web.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/10\/pinsky-for-web-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/10\/pinsky-for-web-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/10\/pinsky-for-web-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project\u2019s physical archive of original letters, email printouts, and audio and video recordings, both raw and edited, are housed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/gotlieb-center\">BU&#8217;s Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The online Pinsky Archive meanwhile represents cutting-edge tech preserving age-old ritual, its namesake says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In an unpredictable, amazing turn of cultural history, digital technology has found wonderful content in the ancient technologies of the human body,\u201d Pinsky says. \u201cThe vocal presence of poetry and song, like the bodily presence of dance or athletics, adds a crucial human immediacy to our screens and databases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinsky created the Favorite Poem Project during his record three terms as poet laureate as a way to showcase poetry\u2019s importance to Americans.
