Where are they?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While staring at a multi-colored image of four overlapping clouds in the constellation Cygnus, a northern constellation on the plane of the Milky Way, Astronomy Professor Dan Clemens thought he saw a bowl of tri-colored spaghetti.<\/p>\n<p>Clemens and his team were studying the origins of massive protostars \u2014 stars that will eventually shine brighter than a thousand Suns \u2014 hidden behind a dark band of clouds and dust, but first they needed to know whether the clouds around them were colliding or interacting. He realized there could be answers in the pasta forms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/Clemens-258x300-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Clemens\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-61209 size-thumbnail\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/Clemens-258x300-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/Clemens-258x300-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>\u201cWe wanted to see whether the clouds were in different layers, like flat noodles in lasagna \u2014 with the layers appearing to overlap on the sky, but in reality located far, far apart along the line of sight \u2014 or whether the clouds were made of tangled filaments, like spaghetti,\u201d Clemens said. \u201cWhich pasta is in front of which pasta? Are there separate piles of pasta, or are they interacting piles of pasta that cause stars to form? If the clouds are well-separated from each other along the line of sight, with no interactions among the clouds, then the lasagna model is best. But if multiple clouds or filaments are jumbled together and possibly interacting or colliding, then spaghetti is the right pasta model.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment61212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment61212\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-or-spaghetti-512x636.jpg\" alt=\"Are the clouds located in distinct layers, like flat noodles in lasagna? Or, are the clouds composed of filaments that tangle up, like spaghetti?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To test for layering, Clemens\u2019 team measured cloud distances using observations and measurements from Boston University\u2019s Perkins Telescope Observatory (PTO) in Northern Arizona; the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a joint project of NASA and the German Space Agency; and the European Space Agency\u2019s Gaia satellite. They also looked at Japanese radio maps.<\/p>\n<p>Gaia provides distances to many stars, and the NIR data tells us whether a star is in front of or behind a gas cloud. To locate the distance of each cloud, the BU team looked for jumps in the NIR polarization, which comes from cloud dust grains interacting with magnetic fields; as well as reddening of the Gaia stars, as starlight passing through clouds grows fainter and redder as some light is absorbed or scattered by the dust grains.<\/p>\n<p>The results, which Clemens presented at a poster session at the American Astronomical Society meeting on Monday, June 13, show that the star-forming region of Cygnus is dominated by one massive gas cloud \u2014 5,500 light years away \u2014 and that other, less-massive clouds are located closer to us \u2014 4,700, 3,300, and 2,400 light years distance \u2014 and thus are not likely involved in the current round of star formation. The clouds are separated by large distances \u2014 800 light years is the smallest separation \u2014 while on the sky the clouds span only 30 to 80 light years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment61213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment61213\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-wins-511x636.jpg\" alt=\"Lasagna Wins!\" width=\"300\" height=\"374\" class=\"wp-image-61213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-wins-511x636.jpg 511w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-wins-768x956.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-wins-755x940.jpg 755w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-wins-320x398.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-wins-620x772.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2022\/06\/lasagna-wins.jpg 771w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment61213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The answer, Clemens says, is lasagna.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now that the team knows that the clouds are separated, Clemens said, they can turn the SOFIA equipment towards the star forming region without worry of signals from other clouds, and continue to explore how the massive protostars in Cygnus were made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clouds are well-separated and in distinct layers,\u201d Clemens says. \u201cSo, lasagna is the right answer, though with lots of ricotta cheese between the layers.
