On April 28,\u00a0BU\u00a0students had the opportunity to discuss the live arts with Broadway composer John Bell Jr., who has conducted\u00a0My Fair Lady<\/em>, Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>, On the Town<\/em>, and\u00a0An American in Paris<\/em>\u00a0on the Great White Way. As Associate Music Director, he\u2019s done over 12 shows with the acclaimed New York City Center Encores! Series<\/a>, including\u00a0Brigadoon<\/em>, Me and My Girl<\/em>, Lady Be Good<\/em>, The New Yorkers<\/em>, Zorba<\/em>,\u00a0and many more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

John is currently the music director of the national tour of\u00a0My Fair Lady (it’s currently suspended).\u00a0 He joked that it not\u00a0for\u00a0COVID-19, he would have been in Chicago rehearsing and performing the show but\u00a0instead was happy and able to meet with students.<\/p>\n

During the session, John answered questions and provided students with a unique insider\u2019s perspective on Broadway. He also gave a historical overview of American musicals and explained how they have addressed various societal themes over time.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn Bell offered great insights into what it\u2019s like to work on major musicals both on and off Broadway as well as the historical contribution the art form\u00a0has made to political discussions,” says Glenn Korman (KHC, Pardee’20), summarizing the evening. “It was a refreshing break from quarantine life and enjoyable night!\u201d<\/p>\n
