{"id":31767,"date":"2018-03-28T16:49:09","date_gmt":"2018-03-28T20:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?p=31767"},"modified":"2019-09-27T13:27:38","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T17:27:38","slug":"weike-wang-wins-whiting-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/weike-wang-wins-whiting-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Creative Writing Alum Receives Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Weike Wang, who earned a doctorate in public health at Harvard University while enrolled in\u00a0BU\u2019s Creative Writing Program, took inspiration from her own life for her debut novel,<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Chemistry. <\/em>The book follows\u00a0a young Ph.D. dropout as she deals with her future\u2014similar to how Wang had to choose between two career paths.<\/p>\n<p>She chose wisely, as\u00a0<em>Chemistry<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>received a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiting.org\/writers\/awards\/current-winners\">Whiting Award<\/a>, one of 10 given each year to up-and-coming writers. Among past winners are Saul Bellow (Hon.\u201904), Eudora Welty, and Seamus Heaney.
