{"id":17147,"date":"2015-05-23T10:46:25","date_gmt":"2015-05-23T14:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?p=17147"},"modified":"2019-09-27T14:17:19","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T18:17:19","slug":"two-cas-programs-ranked-among-best-in-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/two-cas-programs-ranked-among-best-in-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Two CAS Programs Ranked Among Best in the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topuniversities.com\/university-rankings\/world-university-rankings\/2015\">2015 QS World University Rankings by Subject<\/a>, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) placed the BU Departments of Economics and Philosophy among\u00a0the world\u2019s top 40 programs within their disciplines. Both moved up in the rankings, with economics jumping 15 places.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Economics climbed to 32nd\u00a0in 2015, from 47th\u00a0in 2014, and the Department of Philosophy rose to 28th\u00a0(up from 31st). The annual QS rankings, which \u201chighlight the world\u2019s top universities in a range of popular subject areas,\u201d are based on a program\u2019s academic reputation, student employability after graduation, and research citations.<\/p>\n<p>When asked why he believes the economics program was ranked so highly, Department Chair Bart Lipman noted that the faculty consists of excellent economists in virtually all aspects of the field: macroeconomics, development economics, health economics, labor, industrial organization, economic history, economic theory. He also pointed out that the QS rankings define his discipline as \u201ceconomics and econometrics,\u201d and noted that econometrics is one of the Department\u2019s major strengths.<\/p>\n<p>Though he \u201cdoesn\u2019t want to make too much of a ranking,\u201d Lipman admits, \u201cGetting ranked well is fun! It\u2019s nice to see the recognition of the outstanding group of teachers and researchers here at BU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allen Speight, chair of the Department of Philosophy, had a similar response to Lipman\u2019s. \u201cAs philosophers we are often skeptical about things like rankings,\u201d he explains, \u201cbut it\u2019s nice to be recognized in this context for some of our strengths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speight also noted that despite being a small department, their faculty has been impressively productive in both research and teaching.
