Stick to tier 1 for your first class.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also have a FY101 Instructor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/design\/DAGl8rHSgjY\/TH-Bhr8fdge8K3_Eqyj24A\/edit?utm_content=DAGl8rHSgjY&amp;utm_campaign=designshare&amp;utm_medium=link2&amp;utm_source=sharebutton\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presentation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of additional engagement activities\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Share FY101 Overview and Goals<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasize that FY101 builds a sense of belonging in students&#8217; first semester and provides tools for college success<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explain why and how FY101 is going to help with the transition to college<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Review FY101 Syllabus<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use FY101 syllabus as a way to explain the parts of a college syllabus and how to use it. i.e. you are responsible for info in all of your syllabi for your academic classes (due dates, grading criteria, late policies, absence policies, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attendance is expected. If you\u2019re sick or have an emergency, contact your instructor!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to describe the role of the Instructor and Peer Mentor and participatory nature of class<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Group activity<\/strong> of your choice. Get them moving and talking to each other! Check out suggestions from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/student-life\/undergraduate-students\/ospl\/the-first-year-experience\/fy101\/instructor-resources\/ice-breakers-activities\/\">ice breakers.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Encourage students<\/strong> <strong>to attend Splash<\/strong>, the BU Student Activities Fair, usually held on the first Saturday of the academic year at 12pm on Nickerson Field\u00a0 (likely Saturday, September 5, 2026 ) or if your first class meets after Splash (like Monday sections), debrief your student&#8217;s experience Splash and\/or campus involvement thus far. Ask them what campus activities \/ clubs they have been getting into! <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Peer mentors<\/strong><\/span> share their experience at Splash and how they approached getting involved in their first semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Important things<\/strong> to include in your presentation:\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Information for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/student-life\/undergraduate-students\/ospl\/the-first-year-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Year Experience Rewards Program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/student-life\/undergraduate-students\/ospl\/the-first-year-experience\/fy101\/fy101-excursion-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FY101 Excursions<\/a> and a QR code for the mandatory day one FY101 survey.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Peer Mentors<\/strong> <\/span>will have flyers for First Year Rewards and FY101 Excursion promotion, too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete the FY101 Survey<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their phones\/computers: Link TBD<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #88d1d1;\"><strong>Our activity + ice breaker suggestions for the first week:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Name Plate Intros:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students are in pairs. They introduce themselves with their name and three things about them. They switch name plates with their partner. Then that person takes the nameplate and finds someone else to introduce their partner and their three interesting facts to. Pairs switch three times so everyone ends up with a different name plate than how they started. Students re-take seats and introduce the nameplate and the three facts of their final partner (at this point the facts are likely wrong and confused and it\u2019s usually funny\/fun when the actual student has to correct them and do their own intro). Good for week one or later.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2018\/08\/FY101-BINGO.pdf\"><b>FY101 BINGO:<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting to know you activity that gets students moving. You can make a survey in advance of class and use their actual fun facts for Human Bingo.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Commonalities:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Put students in pairs and have them find the most interesting thing they have in common. Have them share it out in the large group. Then put them in groups of four. Have them find the most interesting thing that new group has in common. Share it out in the large group.
