{"id":49011,"date":"2020-06-10T09:45:18","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T13:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?page_id=49011"},"modified":"2023-12-04T12:32:08","modified_gmt":"2023-12-04T17:32:08","slug":"satisfactory-academic-progress","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/phd-mfa\/fellowship-aid\/satisfactory-academic-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD &#038; MFA: Satisfactory Academic Progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences Policy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is the term used when determining a student\u2019s<\/span><span> eligibility for <\/span><span>aid<\/span> (which includes federal loans and federal work study)<span>. At the end of each payment period<\/span> or <span>semester, a review of student<\/span><span>\u2019s SAP is conducted. A student<\/span><span>\u2019s failure to meet SAP standards may result in loss of aid eligibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Please be advised that SAP <\/span><span><\/span><span>s<\/span><span>tandards are utilized solely to determine federal aid eligibility. All GRS students must<\/span><span>\u00a0abide by The Graduate School of A<\/span><span>rts &amp; Sciences\u2019 <\/span><span>A<\/span><span><\/span><span>cademic <\/span><span>S<\/span><span><\/span><span>tandards and <\/span><span>P<\/span><span><\/span><span>olicies.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span>GRS Minimum Standard for Satisfactory Academic Progress<\/span><\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>The Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences requires graduate students to maintain Good Academic Standing<\/span> <span>to remain enrolled in their graduate program and\/or to retain GRS scholarship and\/or fellowship support. The GRS criteria for Good Academic Standing are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Cumulative Grade Point Average: Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Minimum Completion Rate: <\/span><span>A student must complete at least 75% of all cumulative attempted credit hours. The cumulative attempted credit hours include all transfer credits accepted by the University and noted on the academic<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Degree Completion Maximum <\/span><span>Time Limit<\/span><span>s<\/span><span>: <\/span><span>Master\u2019s degrees must be completed within three years and PhD degrees must be completed within seven years after the first registration for that degree<\/span><span> (except for periods of authorized leave). <\/span><span>In addition<\/span><span>, a full-time or certified full-time PhD student who is in good academic standing and who becomes the primary caregiver of an infant or adopted child will receive a one-year extension of their approved time to degree.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Petitions for extensions of time to complete degree requirements must be submitted prior to the end of the above limits. Students exceeding these time limits without an approved petition for an extension of time will not be permitted to register. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Financial Aid Warning<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>A student <\/span>who fail<span>s<\/span> to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress <span><\/span><span>will be<\/span><span> automatically placed on Federal Financial Aid Warning for the next registered<\/span> <span>semester<\/span> or payment period<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>A student will receive an electronic notification to their <\/span><span>Boston University<\/span><span> email address regarding the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards that must be met by the end of the warning period in order to retain eligibility for future federal financial aid.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">SAP Appeal Process<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>A student <\/span><span><\/span><span>who <\/span><span>does not meet the minimum requirements for SAP at the end of the Financial Aid Warning period will be ineligible for federal financial aid<\/span> in the following semester. <span><\/span><span>A<\/span><span><\/span><span>n electronic notification <\/span><span>detailing the appeal process for mitigating circumstances will<\/span><span> be sent <\/span><span>to the<\/span><span> student\u2019s<\/span><span><\/span><span> Boston University email address<\/span><span><\/span><span>. A student has the right to appeal the loss of financial aid eligibility if mitigating circumstances (events totally beyond the student<\/span><span>\u2019<\/span><span>s control) occurred during the preceding payment period\/semester:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some examples of appealable circumstances include: serious illness or injury of the student; serious illness, injury or death of an immediate family member; being victim of a violent crime or house fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The student must submit the<\/span><span> <a href=\"\/cas\/files\/2020\/06\/GRS-SAP_Appeal_Form_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal form<\/a><\/span><span>,<\/span><span><\/span> <span><\/span><span>l<\/span><span>etter of <\/span><span>a<\/span><span>ppeal,<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>supporting documentation<\/span><span>, and an <\/span><span>advisor-<\/span><span>approved academic plan<\/span><span><\/span><span> by the <\/span><span>deadline of the<\/span><span> last day to drop a course (without a W) <\/span><span>for that semester<\/span><span>. Appeals received after the deadline can be automatically denied.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>A student <\/span><span><\/span><span>may<\/span><span> only submit an appeal for the <\/span><span>period <\/span><span>directly following their Warning period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Appeals are only granted once per a student<\/span><span>\u2019<\/span><span><\/span><span>s academic career.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>A student must be registered for courses during the semester <\/span><span>for which <\/span><span>they are submitting the appeal<\/span><span><\/span><span>. Appeals will not be considered for students <\/span><span><\/span><span>who<\/span><span> have dropped<\/span> courses or withdrawn.<\/li>\n<li><span>A student is responsible for all tuition and fee charges at the time the balance is due, even if they are planning to appeal or are waiting for a response from GRS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The decision of the SAP Appeals Committee is final<\/span><span>,<\/span><span> and students will receive an electronic communication to their university email address regarding the outcome.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>A s<\/span><span><\/span><span>tudent<\/span><span><\/span><span> whose appeal has been approved will receive Federal financial aid consideration for the current term. At the end of the term, the student\u2019s academic progress will be reviewed again to determine <\/span><span><\/span><span>financial aid<\/span><span> eligibility<\/span><span> for the following semester<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>A s<\/span><span><\/span><span>tudent<\/span><span><\/span><span> whose appeal has been denied <\/span><span><\/span><span>is<\/span><span> not eligible for financial aid until he\/she <\/span><span>meet<\/span><span>(<\/span><span>s<\/span><span>)<\/span><span> satisfactory academic progress standards.\u00a0 <\/span><span>The s<\/span><span><\/span><span>tudent may continue to enroll in courses, but <\/span><span><\/span><span>is<\/span><span> responsible for all University charges.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Good Academic Conduct<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>All students at the Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences are expected to maintain high standards of academic honesty. It is each student\u2019s responsibility to be aware of the content of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/current-students\/phd-mfa-students\/academic-policies-and-conduct-code\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/current-students\/phd-mfa-students\/academic-policies-and-conduct-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GRS Academic Conduct Code<\/a>, which can be found on the Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences website.<\/p>\n<p>Please note: The GRS Academic Conduct Code is distinct from Good Academic Standing (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/masters-degree-requirements\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/masters-degree-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master<\/a>\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/masters-degree-requirements\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/masters-degree-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">s<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/phd-degree-requirements\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/phd-degree-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PhD<\/a>) requirements and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/failing-grades\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/failing-grades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Satisfactory Academic Progress<\/a> (SAP). Please see the relevant Bulletin pages for additional information about those policies.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Good Academic Standing<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences requires graduate students to maintain Good Academic Standing in order to remain enrolled in their graduate program and\/or to retain GRS scholarship and\/or fellowship support. The GRS criteria for Good Academic Standing are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have no more than two failing or W grades.<\/li>\n<li>Meet all milestones of the degree, such as comprehensive exams, qualifying exams, and dissertation prospectus, on the schedule specified by the program.<\/li>\n<li>Meet all milestones of the degree with sufficient quality of work as specified by the program.<\/li>\n<li>Satisfactorily fulfill all service fellowship obligations, as specified by the program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note: Good Academic Standing is distinct from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/failing-grades\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/failing-grades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Satisfactory Academic Progress<\/a> (SAP) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/academic-conduct\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/academic-conduct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GRS Academic Conduct Code<\/a>.
