Goldberg<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/profiles\/sucharita-gopal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suchi Gopal<\/span><\/a> heads to Belize, it\u2019s not for the beaches by the azure Caribbean waters. She goes to document and map the mangrove forests. And Gopal, a Department of Earth &amp; Environment professor, uses drones.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment87734\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment87734\" style=\"width: 347px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2025\/11\/SuchiGopal.jpg\" alt=\"Sucharita Gopal\" width=\"337\" height=\"320\" class=\"size-full wp-image-87734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2025\/11\/SuchiGopal.jpg 337w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2025\/11\/SuchiGopal-320x304.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment87734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Suchi Gopal<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of Gopal\u2019s study spots is the resort area of Placencia, home to a diverse array of aquatic, amphibian, and avian wildlife, along with seaside swatches of the salt-tolerant mangroves, which provide a natural protective barrier <em>and<\/em> act as carbon-emission sponges. One hectare of mangroves can hold more than 440 metric tons of carbon, the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smithsonian\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/science.si.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Belize.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belize Blue Carbon project<\/span><\/a> notes. Gopal\u2019s research is part of a $20 million, seven-year <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Science Foundation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=2209284&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grant<\/span><\/a> to engage local communities in finding ways to reduce climate risks with equitable, nature-based approaches.<\/p>\n<p>To Gopal, who specializes in geospatial and geographic information systems (GIS), using images from satellites and drones along with other data to chart the location and condition of Belize\u2019s mangroves exemplifies her field\u2019s practical value. Photo courtesy of Suchi Gopal.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gopal, who joined the BU faculty in 1989, has made a career of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2015\/mapmaker-matchmaker-suchi-gopal-power-of-maps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building interdisciplinary connections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She maintains research affiliations with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bump\/people\/sucharita-gopal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BU Marine Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/sucharita-gopal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pardee School of Global Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/profile\/sucharita-gopal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initiative on Cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/igs\/profile\/sucharita-gopal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute for Global Sustainability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/sucharita-gopal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science &amp; Engineering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/remotesensing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Remote Sensing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gopal argues that her transcampus engagement is a natural outgrowth of her field of study. The science of location injects itself into every field. The power of place is everywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She sees this idea come alive in the students who take her introduction to GIS undergraduate and graduate courses. \u201cThose classes attract people from all walks of life, including the business school, public health, social work. They learn to think spatially,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Gopal says she wants students to understand the ramifications of GIS science and shares examples from her own work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She has looked at siting factors for new data centers as the U.S. gears up to support the artificial intelligence market. The choices have ramifications for local water supplies and power grids. And states offering tax incentives to lure new facilities can influence these decisions.<\/li>\n<li>In public health, Gopal worked with Lawrence Were, assistant professor of health sciences at Sargent College of Health &amp; Rehabilitation Sciences, on a study of malaria in Kenya. The project integrated climatic, environmental, and socio-economic variables to show how social and behavioral patterns\u2014and thus biological and environmental risk\u2014are spatially clustered.<\/li>\n<li>For the mangroves research, Gopal is working with BU biology professors Les Kaufman and Ethan Deyle as part of a multi-university team tackling climate change and economics. What are the boundaries of these coastal forests? How do they change over time? GIS mapping gives you a visualization tool to see it,\u201d Gopal says. She adds that GIS practitioners can explore varied analytical techniques: describing what the data show; inferential analysis, using data samples to draw larger conclusions; predictive analysis, to project what is likely to occur; and prescriptive analysis that gives recommendations for the best actions.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe can describe things using a map as a medium,\u201d Gopal says. \u201cWe can do predictive analytics, making sure that we predict where the changes are going to happen based on what we know from the past or what we see as a pattern. And we can also prescribe action,\u201d she says. Illuminating the locations and changes in carbon emissions can yield insights that lead to recommended actions in a metro area, whether that\u2019s Boston or Vienna, Austria, she adds.<\/p>\n<h3>The value of mangroves<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment87710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment87710\" style=\"width: 376px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2025\/11\/Belize1-e1763679102620.jpg\" alt=\"Arts &amp; Sciences colleagues (from left) Ethan Deyle, Gopal, and Les Kaufman. Photo courtesy of Suchi Gopal.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gopal\u2019s career combines a facility with statistical techniques with curiosity about conditions on the ground with a collaborative energy to engage other scientists and, most recently, citizens of the lands she studies. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her recent publication of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-031-74418-1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FinTech Revolution: Bridging Geospatial Data Science, AI, and Sustainability<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Springer, 2024)<\/span>, with coauthor Josh Pitts (CAS`12), a <span>technologist, <\/span>explains how to use technologies like GIS, AI, and blockchain to guide decision-making on environmentally sustainable projects.<\/p>\n<p>In Belize, the BU team and its partners are analyzing data from multiple types of imagery including satellites and at least two types of drone-flown cameras: multispectral cameras that record images in different light wavelengths and LIDAR (light detection and\u00a0ranging) which uses light pulses to create precise three-dimensional images about the Earth\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollaborating with marine and coastal ecologists, local experts, and community leaders, we are developing tools to assess the ecological function and social value of mangroves across time and space,\u201d Gopal says.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, the mangrove forests represent a \u201cnature-based solution\u201d to climate change, where scientists collaborate with local communities. One option is to use the assets on a market like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/eu-emissions-trading-system-eu-ets_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Union\u2019s Emissions Trading System<\/span><\/a>, where companies that emit carbon can purchase credits. If Gopal\u2019s team succeeds, a future landowner in Belize could earn revenue for storing carbon on behalf of a polluter. A blockchain, acting as a digital ledger, could track these transactions securely and transparently, making it difficult to manipulate records\u2014and easier to build trust among all the participants.<\/p>\n<p>That is still in the future. As Gopal prepares for the next round of data collection with drones, supported by continuing NSF grants, she hopes that this project illustrates the value of scientists working in concert with people who can directly benefit from their work\u2014such as the preservation of the rich diversity of mangroves and corals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMangroves symbolize a broader lesson for society: that climate solutions rooted in nature can be both scientifically sound and socially just\u2014but only if informed by the right data and governed through inclusive, equitable processes,\u201d Gopal says. \u201cThis project reflects my broader research agenda, to harness the power of geospatial technologies for adaptive, resilient, and just environmental solutions.
