{"id":72751,"date":"2023-07-28T10:57:17","date_gmt":"2023-07-28T14:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?post_type=r_cas_magazine&#038;p=72751"},"modified":"2023-09-15T17:13:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T21:13:11","slug":"an-impassioned-career-in-art","status":"publish","type":"r_cas_magazine","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/arts-sciences\/article\/an-impassioned-career-in-art\/","title":{"rendered":"An Impassioned Career in Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After one year of working with electrode implants<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in monkeys in a neuropsychology laboratory at Boston University, Leslie Sills (CAS\u201969) decided she wanted to go to art school.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sills had graduated from the College of Liberal Arts\u2014now the College of Arts and Sciences\u2014with a degree in psychology and was contemplating a career in psychological research. In recognition of this work and her continued efforts to celebrate diversity, Sills will receive a 2023 Arts &amp; Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award, as well as an Arts &amp; Sciences IDEAL Award, during BU Alumni Weekend on September 23.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven though I didn&#8217;t become a psychologist, I think studying psychology helped me be who I am. It also helped me be a good teacher and appreciate my students with all their complexities and issues,\u201d Sills said during an interview in her Brookline, Mass., studio. \u201cI consider myself an artist, but psychology is a huge part of me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sills came to BU from a small high school in Northampton, Mass.,\u00a0 without a clear idea of the career she wanted to pursue. As an undergraduate, she navigated personal interests and passions, taking advantage of the breadth of opportunities available to her at the College and the University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLooking back, I see that college was a time to grow, and a time to look at oneself and ask \u2018what is important to me? What do I really care about? What do I really like<\/span>? <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I want my life to evolve?\u2019 she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After her time working in the lab of Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neurology, Allan Mirsky at Boston University School of Medicine\u2014now Boston University Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine\u2014Sills\u2019 answer was art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While she had enjoyed her writing, philosophy, and psychology courses, her favorite undergraduate course was the pottery class that she took \u2014 initially as a degree requirement and later as an elective<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment72832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment72832\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3-636x477.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-72832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3-636x477.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3-755x566.jpg 755w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3-620x465.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/files\/2023\/07\/Sills_gratitude3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment72832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gratitude by Leslie Sills (2008)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sills decided to apply to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she initially pursued ceramic art and then expanded her range of forms and mediums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While an art student, Sills participated in a work study program where she taught children who lived in a housing project in Cambridge.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she faced numerous challenges there, her connection to the children, helping them to express<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">themselves, inspired her to stay.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After three years as a student at SMFA, Sills was asked to teach in the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ceramics department. Her early work drew inspiration from her personal emotions, including anger and repression.
