Pour in the oil (add a bit more if your pan is not nonstick). Saute the cumin seeds for 15\u201330 seconds until they start popping and become fragrant.<\/li>\n<li>Add the peanuts, chilies, and sliced potato to the skillet and reduce heat to medium-high. Toss to coat potatoes in the cumin\/ peanut\/chili mixture. Add salt and 1\/2 tsp ground black pepper.<\/li>\n<li>Saute uncovered for about 15 minutes, tossing occasionally. Make sure all the slices brown a bit. Weird-Looking Freak Saves Apollo 14!\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>This was the headline of the March 1971 <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/don-eyles-extra-weird-looking-freak-saves-apollo-14-40737\/\">article<\/a> about the CAS alum who a month earlier had saved NASA\u2019s third moon landing. It was <strong>Don Eyles&#8217;<\/strong> last-minute computer program\u2014made in just two hours\u2014that fixed a switch on Apollo 14 and allowed the spacecraft to land on the moon. In 2018, Eyles (CAS\u201966) of Boston, Mass., published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sunburst-Luminary-Apollo-Don-Eyles\/dp\/0986385905\"><em>Sunburst and Luminary: An Apollo Memoir<\/em><\/a> (Fort Point Press, 2018), which documents the drama of those years during which he writes that he \u201cworked at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory on the guidance system for the Apollo spacecraft. I created software for the onboard guidance computer of the Lunar Module and worked directly with the astronauts who would use the software. Kulbako captured the moment the horse Arrogate\u2014owned by Prince Khalid bin Abdullah of Saudi Arabia\u2014broke the 152-year-old Saratoga course record at the 2016 Travers Stakes. After he was discharged in 1953, he received notice that he had earned the Bronze Star, but it never came. He\u2019s pursuing a patent for Multiplayer Partisan Sudoku, which transforms the typical Sudoku puzzle into a multiplayer online board game in which players compete for territory. Mike describes it as \u201ca game of pure skill in the same class as Chess, Go, and Tic-Tac-Toe. The most relevant description is a struggle for territory in a condition of rapidly diminishing resources, which definitely should be taken as a commentary on the present state of the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Write to us!
