{"id":25586,"date":"2017-10-24T14:29:07","date_gmt":"2017-10-24T18:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?post_type=r_cas_magazine&#038;p=25586"},"modified":"2017-11-09T14:05:34","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T19:05:34","slug":"from-the-archives-fall-2017","status":"publish","type":"r_cas_magazine","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/arts-sciences\/fall-2017\/from-the-archives-fall-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Can you tell us more about this archival photo from 1976?\u00a0Photo by BU Photography<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we attack the Death Star from this side\u2026\u201d A little under a year before 1977\u2019s <em>Star Wars<\/em> gave menacing moon-like orbs a bad name, BU astronomy students contemplated their own in room 515 at CAS.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/?post_type=r_cas_magazine&amp;p=25043&amp;preview=true\">CAS-led team\u2019s announcement<\/a> that it might have discovered some of the most distant galaxy clusters ever found, we sent Digital Imaging Manager Andrew Costello into the BU photography archives on an astronomy mission. With a new <em>Star Wars<\/em> movie due in cinemas soon, this photo seemed too good to ignore\u2014even if we have little idea what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<p>The only description on the small brown envelope that holds the Kodak negatives for the photo shoot, which took place on October 13, 1976, is \u201cProf. Janes\u2019 class\u2014astronomy.\u201d Kenneth Janes joined BU as an assistant professor in 1973 and chaired the astronomy department for four years in the 1980s. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/astronomy\/profile\/kenneth-janes\/\">biography on his BU webpage<\/a> lists his primary research field as \u201cthe study of the stellar populations of the galaxy and the search for extra-solar planets.\u201d Since 2011, he has been a professor emeritus.<\/p>\n<p>But we can only guess what Janes\u2019 class is learning about in this photo, so we need your help.
