PhD student participates in training cruise to understand how large earthquakes occur

PhD student Emily Schottenfels has set sail to study earthquakes aboard the R/V Roger Revelle off the coast of Oregon in the region of the Cascadia subduction margin. The training cruise is funded by the National Science Foundation Early Career Seismic Chief Scientist program. Schottenfels is learning to design and execute a research expedition and acquire and process marine seismic data in order to help determine how large earthquakes can occur. The work can be followed on the cruise’s blog at http://csw.unols.org.
